Not everything trending is actually helping your skin. Some of it is just louder marketing, not better results.
Here’s what’s trending and why we’re cautious:
1. Slugging
This is when you apply a thick layer of Vaseline as the last step in your routine to “lock in” moisture overnight.
The issue? It doesn’t just seal in hydration. It seals in oil, bacteria, and congestion too. For many skin types, especially acne-prone, this can lead to breakouts.
2. At-home microneedling
This uses handheld rollers or pens with tiny needles meant to create micro-injury in the skin. The problem is control. At home, it’s easy to scratch the skin, go too deep, or introduce bacteria. What’s meant to improve texture can actually create irritation and long-term damage when not done properly.
3. Pore vacuums
These are suction tools designed to pull debris out of your pores. But aggressive suction can damage the skin, cause broken capillaries, and increase inflammation. Over time, this can make pores appear more noticeable, not less.
4. Beef tallow moisturizer
This is rendered animal fat being used as a “natural” moisturizer. While it’s trending for barrier repair, it’s very heavy and pore-clogging for many people, especially if you’re already dealing with breakouts or uneven texture.
Here’s the bigger picture:
Trends are one-size-fits-all. Your skin is not.
What actually works is a customized plan. The right treatments, the right products, and the right timing based on your skin.
