ADHD is often talked about in terms of what is hard.

And yes, managing executive functioning and emotional regulation can require real effort.

But peer reviewed research consistently shows something equally important.

ADHD traits are linked to stronger divergent thinking, the ability to generate many ideas and original solutions.

A large review in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews by Hoogman and colleagues in 2020 found the most consistent difference in idea generation. Other studies have found higher levels of real world creative achievement in adults with ADHD, including research by White and Shah in 2011 and Boot and colleagues in 2017.

This does not erase challenges.

But it does remind us that ADHD is about more than weaknesses.

Individuals with ADHD have a unique processing style, one that includes meaningful strengths, including creativity.

That difference adds to the beauty of collective experience.

Think about the people you know with ADHD. Do you find this to be true in your experience? I do!

Did you know?
Heavy work is calming for the nervous system and often very effective for neurodivergent individuals.

Pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting provide deep body input that helps the nervous system settle and organize.

Use heavy work when feeling dysregulated or before a stressful activity. Even 5–15 minutes can help.

Toddlers: pushing baskets, carrying toys
Middle school: wall push-ups, backpack carry
High school and adults: strength training, rowing, carrying groceries

Try it and notice what changes.
