We provide our county residents with a community sharps disposal program to safely dispose of used needles, lancets, and other medical sharps with funding assistance from the Mahoning County Green Team.

Used sharps can pose a significant health threat to recycling and sanitation workers. It is also beneficial to keep medical waste out of our local landfill facilities. Mahoning County residents can bring their FDA approved sharps containers to our Laboratory Services office at 116 Westchester Drive in Austintown, Monday – Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is invisible and odorless, but deadly. Your best protection? A working CO alarm! This CO Awareness Week remember:

• Test your CO alarm once per month.
• Replace batteries at least once per year (or as directed).
• Replace the alarm itself every 5-7 years, depending on the model.

It only takes a minute, but it could save your life. Learn more: www.nfpa.org/carbonmonoxide.

Happy Halloween! Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to the safety of our little trick-or-treaters. Here are five safety tips to make sure your little trick-or-treater has fun and stays safe this Halloween:

1. Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
2. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.
3. Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street. Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
4. Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
5. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children’s vision.

Don’t let your Halloween party turn into a horror story! Perishable foods should never be left out for more than two hours (or one hour if it’s above 90 degrees). Bacteria can grow fast and it’s not the kind you want at your table!

• Keep cold foods cold (below 40 degrees)
• Keep hot foods hot (above 140 degrees)
• When in doubt, throw it out!

Stay safe, not sorry. Happy Halloween!

As we close out SIDS and Safe Sleep Awareness Month, we want to remind you of the importance of room sharing versus bed sharing. Room sharing (same room, different sleep surfaces) helps reduce the risk of SIDS. Bed sharing (sharing the same sleep surface) increases it. Let’s keep our babies close while making sure they are safe.

If you need a safe place for your baby to sleep, are at least 32 weeks pregnant or have an infant under the age of one, and meet WIC income requirements, we can provide you with a free pack and play. To learn more or to schedule a safe sleep class, please call us at 330-270-2855 ext. 125.
