Ethical ABA Matters:

At The Behavior Institute we focus on dignity, respect, and meaningful outcomes for every child. Ethical ABA means working on appropriate goals, recommended medically necessary hours, maintaining client dignity and respect, as well as ensuring that every client is making progress. And making changes if something isn't working.

Morning Routine Tip:

Use visual schedules to make mornings smoother and more predictable. It's also important when working with schedules that you build in flexibility. We don't want the child to be so rigid with the schedule that when something on that needs to change (i.e. running out of the breakfast that they usually eat) that, the change in the schedule causes increased behaviors.

Maddie is an amazing staff who has worked with us since last summer. She showcases amazing talents as an undergraduate at Duquesne University. She is kind, thoughtful, and caring. She gives her best during each session. She is constantly thinking about how she can improve or what she can do differently. She is very motivated. She has participated in a variety of internships and brings the knowledge that she learns in those environments back to The Behavior Institute to make her employment with us that much better. We are so lucky to have her as part of our team.

Prompting helps guide learning and are gradually faded to build independence.

When working with a child and using prompting, it is important to be aware of the prompts that we are offering, we don't want to constantly offer prompts without working to fade them or the child might become prompt dependent.

Prompt dependency is when the child waits to be prompted even when they might be capable of doing the skill on their own.

Early Intervention Matters:
The earlier support begins, the greater the opportunity to build foundational skills. Early intervention also is when the child has the most time available (i.e. they are not in school yet); their schedules are more flexible, there are less to skills to catch up on because there is less things that they are potentially behind on.

At The Behavior Institute we focus on developmentally appropriate skills at all levels, so when working with children as part of early intervention the skills that are targeted are ones that are developmentally and age appropriate for that child.

Building Communication
Whether it’s words, signs, or devices—communication is life-changing.
We help children find their voice.

At The Behavior Institute we believe that all behaviors are a communication. It is our job to figure out what a child is communicating and teach them how to communicate that in a way that better suits them. This means that when a child is engaging in behaviors like tantrums or self-injurious behaviors we would work to figure out what they are trying to communicate and then meet them wherever they are with their communication to help them get that need met without hurting themselves.

Why Supervision Matters
Quality ABA includes consistent supervision by a BCBA to ensure programs are effective, ethical, and individualized.
This is what makes real progress possible.

At The Behavior Institute, we provide 20% supervision for all staff hours as well as 1:1 meetings weekly with staff to ensure that any changes that need to be made or reviewed can happen in a timely manner. This helps all staff to feel supported while working with each client.

Myth vs Fact:

❌ Myth: ABA is one-size-fits-all
✅ Fact: Every program is tailored to the child’s unique needs and goals

The Behavior Institute utilizes a variety of methods to ensure that goals are individualized for each child. Assessments, parent report, child report, teacher report, and observations are just a few.

ABA is about building independence - one skill at a time.

During sessions we focus on the core deficits of autism - social skills, communication, and restricted repetitive patterns of behavior. All three of those things can help with independence. By giving children a way to be independent we can increase their self-confidence and their ability to get their needs met.

Just like nature, what we "water" or pay attention to the most is what is going to happen the most. When we focus on the positives that are occurring around us - we will see more positive things. When we focus on all the good things our children can do, they will continue to flourish and those behaviors increase.

On the other hand - when we think about the negative things (i.e. the hard times, the struggles) we will notice those things more instead of the truly amazing things that are happening in front of us.

Model the behavior that you want to see - children learn by watching. Your actions are a powerful teaching tool.

Continue to model appropriate language, answering questions, social skills, and all other behaviors that you want them to exhibit. It doesn't mean that they will pick up on it immediately, but doing this will help them become exposed to it.
