Polymyositis may present in childhood, middle age, or old age and, depending on the age, may have different significance.
The more common type occurring in the young to middle age group relates to an autoimmune disease that causes a fairly progressive onset of pain and weakness in the muscles especially affecting the head and neck, the shoulders and the lower extremities.
The diagnosis can be confirmed by having an electrical study called an EMG or by having a biopsy. The treatment ranges from using corticosteroids to immunosuppressive drugs.

It is caused by an elevated uric acid level in the blood and the uric acid can crystallize and produce deposits in the joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Certain foods and drugs may raise the uric acid levels and lead to gout attacks.
Gout is strongly linked to high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and heart and kidney disease. Gout tends to run in families and rarely affects children. Lifestyle changes can have a very positive outcome in the management of gout.

Autoimmune diseases arise from an inappropriate immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. In other words, the immune system mistakes some part of the body as foreign and attacks its own cells. Some examples of common autoimmune diseases are rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis.
