“This month, our journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, yoga’s ethical teachings, continues with an exploration of Asteya or non-stealing. As I delve into this principle, I’m struck with the clarity that the very concept of ownership is the fuel perpetuating our culture of stealing. Conversely, the deep knowing that nothing can be owned feels foundational to all of the indigenous cultures that I have experienced. This way of living cultivates systems of reciprocity, gratitude and generosity rather than ones based on selfishness, greed and scarcity.
The ancient teaching of Asteya invites us to remember that everything we possess or even experience is a precious gift and we are asked to receive and respond to life’s gifts from this perspective. Asteya inspires us to develop the competency to fully receive what is given to us, whether it comes in the form of great bounty or profound suffering. Experiencing life this way, we are constantly growing ourselves and our world into its fullest potential.”
