☀️💬🎉 Unlock your child’s communication potential this summer with speech therapy support!

Here are 3️⃣ reasons to consider summer services for your child who has an IEP or who could benefit from individualized support:

1️⃣ Maintain Progress: Summer break should never mean a pause in progress! Continuing speech therapy services means school year progress is sustained and even accelerated during the summer months. Consistency is key in helping your child reach their communication goals!
2️⃣ Prevent Regression: Just like any other skill, speech and language abilities can regress without regular practice. Summer support reinforces skills and prevents any setbacks that may be encountered during the break. Let's keep those hard-earned gains intact!
3️⃣ Dive into Confidence: Summer break is often filled with social gatherings and new experiences. Speech therapy services can help your child develop greater confidence in their ability to communicate effectively, express themselves clearly, engage in conversations, and forge meaningful connections, ultimately leading to a more enriching and enjoyable summer experience.

Let's dive into a season of growth and confidence!

Make room for awe. You won't be disappointed...promise.

Here’s how experts say we can infuse more awe into our everyday lives — and why we should.

Studies suggest that 70-93% of all communication is nonverbal 🤯.

Nonverbal messages are often perceived unconsciously and can deeply impact how we feel. This is why nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in the co-regulation process with kids (and adults!).

When a child is emotionally overwhelmed and dysregulated, our presence as a loving and trusted adult is often our most valuable tool in restoring a felt sense of safety, connection, and calm.

We communicate relational cues of safety or threat through our facial expressions, eye contact, tone of voice, gestures, posture, and the timing and intensity of our responses.

These nonverbal signals can either aid or hinder the adult-child connection, often leading to co-regulation or co-escalation.

What we say is important, but just as important is how we say things and the nonverbal messages we send.

What does your nonverbal communication say to others?

I recently read that children are more likely to do “as you do” regardless of what you say.

Appreciating that young children learn so much by observing the models around them, it makes sense that the example we set as adults, for better or worse, impacts a child’s developing brain.

Expecting behavior change in children often requires us to take a closer look at the models we're giving them through our own behaviors and habits.

If we want kids to learn about empathy, honesty, respect, generosity, and kindness—are they seeing us live a life that embodies those values?

If we want kids to learn how to be more skillful in regulating their emotions and body—are they seeing us use adaptive coping tools to do so?

James Baldwin said it well—“Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.”

The capacity to skillfully choose our behavior. ✨

This is so powerful.

For adults and kids alike, practicing mindfulness strengthens our ability to pause in the space between stimulus and response. In this space, we can thoughtfully choose our next right step rather than impulsively reacting as we tend to do when on autopilot.

It's certainly not easy, but little by little, what we practice grows stronger. 🧡

If you are finding yourself feeling overwhelmed, distracted, anxious… you're not alone.

It makes sense.

When the world feels heavy, anchoring our mind and body to the present moment can help to bring a sense of grounding and inner calm.

One way I like to practice this is with the 5-4-3-2-1 method (a technique for kids and adults alike).

It looks like this…

Take a few slow, deep breaths and feel your feet on the ground. Then begin to notice:

5 things you see around you

4 things you can feel/touch

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

What practices nourish you in times of stress?

We move through life wearing invisible backpacks that hold our life experiences, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that the outside world cannot see.

Whether it’s depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, or other life stressors; we never truly know what someone is carrying.

With children, it's no different.

The invisible backpacks they wear each day impact their ability to learn, detect and respond to stressors, engage in the classroom and connect with others.

And they cope the best they know how.

It's in the context of safe and connected relationships that children do their best thinking and learning.

As we begin a new school year, with heightened stress levels for all, we must keep this top of mind and prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of students and educators alike. 🧡

So many things about our modern lives can feel depleting. To show up, be present, and bring the best version of ourselves to relationships, self-care is essential.

So, friendly nudge, be kind to yourself. And give yourself permission to do more of the things that truly fill you up.

For me, that means soaking up time in nature! What fills your cup?

What can you do to support healthy brain development in children?
This wise 7-year old has some great tips! She highlights the benefits of connection, communication, and play on lifelong learning, behavior, and well-being, sharing effective strategies for parents and caregivers to help all kids thrive by age five.

"What if I was to tell you that a game of peek-a-boo could change the world?" asks seven-year-old Molly Wright, one of the youngest-ever TED speakers. Breaking down the research-backed ways parents and caregivers can support children's healthy brain development, Wright highlights the benefits of pla...

Please excuse me while I shout this from the rooftops.🗣 Couldn’t have said it better myself .

Children communicate their feelings and needs the best way they know how. Often this is expressed through behavior. It’s up to us adults to decode the language of their behaviors with more conscious curiosity and empathy and less labeling, blame, or judgement.
