Shiver me timbers! Today marks 97 years of Popeye on the comic strip scene.

💪The voice actors for Popeye and Olive Oyl married in real life. Jack Mercer, who famously voiced Popeye for 40 years, was married to Margie Hynes, who voiced Olive Oyl between 1938 and 1942.
💪Donkey Kong was almost a Popeye game. The hit arcade game Donkey Kong was originally planned to be a Popeye game, with Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl as the main characters, but Nintendo couldn't acquire the licensing rights at the time.
