Commotio Cordis is the medical term for an unlucky timed hit to the chest. If timed at the wrong part of the cardiac electrical cycle , it can send the heart into ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest. It is rare but can happen to healthy athletes - most commonly in lacrosse, hockey, and baseball where a high velocity object hits the chest. While we don’t have all the details from tonight’s football game, it is seemingly more probable that this is what America witnessed on Monday Night Football. The only thing to save someone in this circumstance is prompt defibrillation usually with an AED. This is why I have been an AED advocate in Kern County and I am proud to have helped to ensure that AED’s are on all Kern High School campuses. AED’s save lives and prevent catastrophe. Praying they were able to use it promptly tonight at that football game if indeed it was Commotio Cordis.
