Why does SMILE have a lower risk of dry eyes than LASIK? Well, why is there a chance of dry eye with LASIK? Since we are doing work on your cornea to correct your vision, corneal nerves, which provide a "feedback loop" for tear production, can be interrupted during surgery.

Since LASIK requires a flap, the larger incision means more corneal nerves are affected by the procedure. Fortunately, most people's post-procedure dry eye symptoms are temporary and resolve once their nerves regenerate and the cornea heals.

Since flapless SMILE only requires a significantly smaller incision than LASIK, there is less risk of the procedure affecting corneal nerves. This means the chance of inducing dry eye is lower, too. Now, this doesn't mean you'll have no dry eyes, and you'll still be recommended to use a lot of artificial tears during the healing phase, but generally, patients experience less irritation.
