Today, staff and client volunteers came out on a Saturday to help clean up some graffiti we found on our property. There’s no evidence that the graffiti was left by someone in our program, as we are in a high traffic area that accessible to the public. Despite this, we believe it is important for us to take accountability for our space and be of service, even if we aren’t positive that it’s our mess to clean up.
The space we work in is a reflection of us, and we are a reflection of the recovery community at large. La Vida Nueva is very well known in our community. Our name, logo, and reputation are highly recognizable and well-regarded by others. For that reason, we always seek to serve as ambassadors for the recovery community. Because we recover so loudly and proudly, it’s important that we use our existence as a shining example of the fact that people do recover, that people with substance use disorders are worthy of dignity and respect, and that the stigma many carry against our community is based in prejudice and not facts.
We recover loudly, so that others may stop dying silently.
Many thanks to our clients and staff who came out to be of service, enjoy tacos, and serve as a good example to others.
