SWIPE FOR VIDEO -> Pumpkins are a great tool for getting practice with fine motor skills. During the process of carving, scooping, manipulating tools, and grabbing, your child is learning control, dexterity, strength and most important, play!

A few things to think about if you are considering pumpkin as a tool:

✨GRIP: can your child hold utensils on their own?

✨CONTROL: can your child control movement with tools?

✨STRENGTH: does your child have the strength and dexterity to manipulate the guts, seeds, and tools used for the pumpkin?

It's Valentine's Day so we just couldn't resist a cheesy poem!
It is true though...we do love our speech therapists and occupational therapists!!
But more than that, we love working with all of our amazing clients!

There are so many reasons why a child might need OT…
-Hard time with clothing fasteners, this might be due to challenges with fine motor or visual motor skills
-Humans are very social beings but sometimes it can be hard making new friends. If your child struggles playing with peers, OT might be helpful
-Handwriting is a part of daily life. Is your child's handwriting messy and hard to read, do they hate handwriting? OT might be beneficial.
-We learn how to manage our emotions throughout childhood but if your child becomes frustrated often during the day and struggles to recover from meltdowns then OT might help.
-Is your child a picky eater or are meltdowns frequent around mealtimes, a feeding evaluation might be beneficial.
-Does your child show little interest in movement but his/her peers are walking, running & jumping? An OT evaluation might provide some insight.
-Is your child bothered by certain fabrics? By bright lights or loud noises? An OT sensory evaluation might be able to help.
-Hard time focusing and organizing materials? Executive functions play a big role in our day to day life. If your child struggles here an OT evaluation might be able to help

Why we might need speech and language therapy and how we can help?
Speech is how we say sounds and words. This can include:
-Articulation: how we make speech sounds using your mouth, lips and tongue. All of our articulators (mouth, lips, tongue) are needed to produce speech sounds.
-Voice: How we use our vocal folds and breath to make sounds. Voice can be loud, too soft, high or low pitched. Did you know you can actually hurt your voice by talking too much, yelling, or coughing without proper vocal hygiene.
-Fluency: refers to the rhythm of our speech. Sometimes we repeat sounds or pause while talking. We can have typical dysfluencies and some dysfluencies are not typical and we need help coming up with strategies to smooth out our rhythm of our sentence.

Language refers to the words we use and how we use them to share ideas and get what we want. Language includes:
-What words mean. Some words have more than one meaning and we need help learning what they all mean.
-How to make new words from an initial word and how one change to the word can change the meaning of the word. Talk about confusing!
-How we put words together including the order of our words. Sometimes we need extra help putting sentences together with appropriate grammar.
-Knowing what to say in different environments including in different social settings. Should I have said that?
