In a world that often demands our exhaustion,
we are choosing our wholeness.

As a mom of three and a licensed professional counselor certified in perinatal mental health, I’m going to say something that should stop us in our tracks:

The leading cause of death for postpartum people is su***de related to untreated or under-treated mental health conditions.

Not infection.
Not hemorrhage.
Not something rare.

Su***de.

Behind closed doors, many new parents are fighting battles no one sees — postpartum depression, anxiety, trauma, intrusive thoughts, rage, numbness, shame — while being told they should feel “grateful,” “blessed,” or “fine.”

I see it every day.

I see the high-functioning mom who hasn’t slept.
The strong one who won’t ask for help.
The woman who loves her baby and still feels like she’s drowning.

If that’s you, hear me:

You are not broken.
You are not weak.
You are not a bad mother.
And you are not alone.

Struggling after birth is not a character flaw. It is a health condition. And health conditions deserve treatment — not silence.

You deserve support.
You deserve accessible, compassionate care.
You deserve to live.

Talking about maternal mental health saves lives.
Making care accessible saves lives.
Showing up for each other saves lives.

They didn’t teach us the weight.

They taught us when it started.
They didn’t teach us what it cost.

A timeline of recognition.
Not a timeline of existence.

Black history has never needed permission to exist.
Black pain has never needed proof.
Black resilience has never been accidental.

So when we talk about honoring Black History Month,
we’re also talking about honoring the nervous systems that learned to survive in unsafe worlds.
The bodies that held grief in silence.
The minds that carried generations and kept going anyway.

What if honoring our history isn’t only about remembering what happened…
but also about tending to what it did to us?

What if rest is remembrance?
What if softness is legacy?
What if healing is the most honest form of honoring?

We braved the snow ❄️ and showed up anyway—because our young people deserve to be seen, heard, and supported.

This weekend, Zeely and Dymond had the honor of attending and supporting a powerful student-led initiative, Heal, Hope, Rise: A Student Wellness Conference at Mastery Shoemaker Campus in West Philadelphia.

We also facilitated a breakout group, Finding Your Voice: Mental Health, Identity, and Self-Expression, creating space for students to explore who they are, share their stories, and strengthen their voices.

So grateful to witness the leadership, creativity, and resilience of these students. The future is bright. ✨
