It’s the Phillies home opener today! In honor of this exciting day for our city, we’re recognizing two of our permanent residents who made notable contributions to America’s pastime. ⚾️
For our die-hard Phillies fans, we could not celebrate opening day without mentioning the late, great Harry Kalas (1936-2009). The legendary Hall of Fame Sports Broadcaster did play-by-play radio and over 6,000 television broadcasts for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1971 until his death in 2009. His gravesite at Laurel Hill East is marked by a large microphone monument, sod from Citizens Bank Park, and seats from Veterans Stadium.
William Henry (Harry) Wright (1835-1895) may not be a household name today, but he was a living legend for several decades during the 19th century and was one of the most important contributors to 19th century baseball. Wright is widely revered as the "Father of Professional Baseball" as engraved on his monument under a life-sized bronze statue.
