On September 2 the Gabrielino Trail from the junction with Bear Canyon Trail to the Ken Burton Trail will be open after a 9 year closure due to the Station fire.

The Gabrielino Trail was the first National Recreation Trail in the USA. It follows an ancient Native American path. It is 30 miles long from near JPL to Santa Anita Canyon.

Bellfree Contractors has been working on the trail off and on for the past three years. Many other groups worked on the trail including the Los Angeles Conservation Corps as well as hundreds of volunteers from the mountain biking groups CORBA the MWBA as well as Trail running groups.

If you get up there have a close look at the section of trail from the Burton Trail to about 3 miles up. It was literally cut into rock and is a very impressive amount of work that went into building this trail. It is said to be an ancient Native American path that in mid 1950's Forest Service crews spent a substantial amount of time widening the path and getting sections out of the stream bed.

Some of the sections that had been cut into the rock above the streambed had not been used in years due to slides and other maintenance issue. They could not even be seen and no one knew they were there until after the fire burned away all the brush that hid them.

We have them all restored now so you can keep your feet dry in the winter!

Its a great place for back/bikepacking too. It is so close to the city but seems so far away! I was lucky enough to spend several nights up there while working on the trail.

Before and after shots of one section we restored. More photos will be added to our website soon.
