Brain injuries can mean anything from stroke, concussion, brain tumor and more.
Many brain injuries can lead to an increased risk of developing health issues in the future. Research has found moderate or severe traumatic brain injuries increase your risk of developing Alzheimerβs disease.
Take steps to reduce your risk of brain injury:
Concussions:
-Always wear your seatbelt in the car.
-Wear a helmet that fits when biking, riding a motorcycle, skating, skiing, horseback riding, or playing contact sports.
-Prevent falls on stairs by putting up handrails.
-Put grab bars in the bathroom, with nonslip mats in the tub and on floors.
-Strengthen your neck muscles. Strong neck muscles may be able to help absorb some of the impact of blows to the head and decrease the risk of concussion.
Stroke:
-Improve your lifestyle. Eating a healthy diet and adding exercise to your daily routine can improve your health. You should also make sure to get enough sleep.
-Avoid risky lifestyle choices or make changes to your behaviors. Smoking and to***co use, including va**ng, recreational drug use or prescription drug misuse, and alcohol misuse can all increase your risk of having a stroke.
-Manage your health conditions and risk factors. There are several conditions which can increase your risk of having an ischemic stroke.
-See your primary care provider for a checkup or wellness visit annually. Yearly wellness visits can detect health problems long before you feel any symptoms.
Brain tumor:
Unfortunately, you canβt prevent a brain tumor. You can reduce your risk of developing a brain tumor by avoiding environmental hazards such as smoking and excessive radiation exposure.
If you have a first-degree biological relative who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, itβs important to tell your healthcare provider. They may recommend genetic counseling to see if you have an inherited genetic syndrome thatβs associated with brain tumors.
There are many other types of brain injury. Be sure to do your research and protect your brain at all costs!
