The PATIENTS Program

The PATIENTS Program The PATIENTS Program partners with patients and care providers to answer questions about the best treatment options to improve health and quality of life.

PATIENTS stands for PATient-centered Involvement in Evaluating the effectiveNess of TreatmentS – which is exactly what it sounds like, and not as complex as it seems. We want to invite patients will all kinds of conditions to get more involved in their health care by making informed, empowered decisions. We also help connect patients with the research and clinical trials that are of interest to them. Our emphasis on patient advocacy fosters partnerships between patients and researchers. We believe that patients who are able to manage their own conditions are better able to share what works, and what doesn't, with researchers and health care providers. This translates to better health outcomes for generations to come.

In this episode of The Bridge: Your Health, Your Voice, host Paris Barnes sits down with Joe Howarth, Lead Training Specialist for the PATIENTS Professors Academy (PPA), and Peyton Miles, a young health advocate and a 2025 PPA graduate.

Together, they explore how the Academy empowers patients, caregivers, community members, and researchers to co-create solutions that make health research more inclusive and community-led.

Peyton shares a powerful personal story about her own health journey, discussing how she discovered advocacy and the lessons she learned about the importance of trust and community connection.

The episode also offers a preview of what’s next for the Academy’s fifth year—including new interactive tools and networking opportunities.

Whether you’re a patient, researcher, or community advocate, this conversation is a reminder that meaningful research starts with listening—and that everyone has a role to play in shaping a more connected and compassionate healthcare community.
