Meaty
By Samantha Irby

Genre: Humor/ Essays

Dubbed “the Bard of quarantine” by the NYTimes, Samantha Irby was social distancing before it was cool. She is wry and hilarious and I can gaurantee funnier than anything you’re scrolling through right now.

Recommended if your attention span is currently frayed by current events. This is necessary levity.

The Corner
by D. Watkins

Genre: Memoir

A smaller and more digestible version of The Corner, this book is required reading for anyone working in Baltimore or interested in aiding what ails American cities.

D. Watkins is a gifted writer- introducing us to his memories through dialogue and making the experiences of life in east Baltimore conversational and relatable.

D. Watkins ate paint chips as a kid when there wasn't enough food in the house. But you wouldn’t know it because he glosses over these kind of details as his trajectory is one of continuously moving forward.

Book therapy is a method for using the power of reading to support better mental health and wellbeing. Reading literature has often been recognized as a therapeutic medium with curative effects that harness the power of creative storytelling, poetry, novellas, personal development and self-help books.

Since there’s not a reliable algorithm for the kinds of books you may enjoy reading (reading is highly personalized and subject to your lived experience) I’d love to help you find a safe space during this really wild time we are living right now.
