A diagnosis changes everything—and not just for the person diagnosed.

When someone in your family or friend group receives an autism diagnosis, it often takes time for loved ones to process the news.

Think about the Girl Meets World episode where they discover their friend, Farkle, is autistic. Their reaction isn’t the expected sadness or drama; it’s a moment of recalibration.

Sometimes, denial or resistance comes from a place of love, fear of the unknown, or a perception that the diagnosis conflicts with who they thought you/your child were.

💖 Our Compassion Tip: If you’ve shared a diagnosis, remember to give grace to those closest to you. They need time to shift their perspective and fully embrace the neurodiversity of the person they love. Education and patience are the greatest tools for acceptance.

We support every person in the family through this journey.

We love seeing authentic representation like Dr. Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor.

While soft skills like communication or eye contact may develop differently, the analytical excellence and focus many autistic individuals possess are undeniable strengths, especially in fields like medicine!

The takeaway from this scene (Dr. Murphy connecting with an autistic patient) is critical: Understanding and adjusting communication styles is the key to successful interaction.

This applies directly to training our Law Enforcement and Emergency Responders.

🚨 Education Saves Lives: Professionals need training to distinguish between someone who is in crisis, experiencing a meltdown, or communicating due to autism. A different approach, focused on calm, clear, and sensory-aware methods, is vital for safety and de-escalation.

This is why education and training are essential for everyone in our community.

Is Roo Autistic?

While labels are complex, the real benefit is seeing that our kids can resonate with characters who see the world differently.

Whether you view it as an “illness” or just a different wiring (a debate for another day!), seeing unique traits represented helps our kids feel seen.

Does your child resonate with a character? Share their story in the comments!

Could Ferb from Phineas and Ferb be autistic?

He’s non-verbal, brilliant, and rarely speaks. It’s fun to theorize about character traits!

Important Note: Having qualities that overlap with Autism does NOT mean someone has a clinical diagnosis. It takes multiple expert opinions and assessments to truly understand a child’s profile.

Seeing Caillou help his friend Andy when the fire alarm was too much is a perfect reminder: kindness is an essential skill. đź’™

We need to teach all our kids to be allies, to understand sensory sensitivity, and to offer accommodations (like those headphones!). When we teach empathy, we build an inclusive world.

Is it Autism, or is it just a really tough moment for your child?

It’s easy for parents to disagree or feel uncertain during this process.

That’s why we always recommend seeking opinions from multiple doctors or specialists before making a decision about diagnosis.

It’s also completely normal to experience denial, especially when cultural differences shape how you view development. We understand.

At All Star ABA, we have your back every step of the way. đź’™

When the Jubilee video asked if people would rather have Autism, the answer from the majority was clear: No, they wouldn’t change it.

This is their identity. This is how they are wired.

We firmly believe that what others call a “weakness” is often a superpower. We see the strength, the deep focus, and the unique brilliance that comes with this difference.

Never be ashamed of who you are. We’re here to support the individual! 🌟

Ever wonder why certain social rules or expectations feel challenging? It often comes down to how information is processed!

Neurotypical: Social context is usually intuitive and quickly decoded.

Mild Autism (Autistic): Requires more explicit clarity, direct communication, and time to process sensory/social input.

Understanding this difference helps us meet every child where they are! If you love content that helps you understand your child better, make sure to follow us for more insights. đź’™

When your child doesn’t respond right away, they aren’t ignoring you.

Often, they are deeply concentrating, processing what you said, or managing sensory input. This is a form of communication!

How to Approach the Situation (Like a Better Big Bird):

Here are the top 3 steps to approach this moment, respect their focus, and ensure safety:

Wait 10 Seconds: Give them silent time to finish their current thought or task before repeating yourself. Their brain might be busy!

Move Close & Use a Gentle Touch: Instead of just yelling their name, move into their visual space and use a gentle, pre-approved touch (like a light tap on the shoulder) to cue them that you need their attention.

State the Expectation Clearly & Briefly: Use short, direct language. Instead of, “Could you maybe put your coloring away so we can talk?” try: “Julia, look. Time for snack.”
