Cooking family recipes enriches our emotional well-being by creating joy through our connections with our loved ones. These treasured dishes remind us of our roots and pay tribute to those who have passed down their traditions. Engaging in this practice can help us navigate feelings of loneliness or grief, serving as a means of self-care and introspection that strengthens our sense of identity. Even if you’re not an expert in the kitchen, tasting your grandma’s famous sweet potato pie or your auntie’s mac and cheese allows you to feel part of a generational legacy full of heirlooms that are uniquely yours and link you to something greater.

Personalization is a common cognitive distortion where we perceive external problems as our fault, even when we have no control over the situation, like a car accident due to weather, or a loved one developing an illness. Feelings of self-doubt and guilt lead us to blame ourselves without seeing the full picture. While this distortion initially creates a false sense of control, when it becomes a pattern, it can lead to low self-esteem and anxiety.

To counteract this, seek help, ask yourself what you are truly in control of, and practice self-compassion. Mindfulness can help you become aware of your thoughts in the present moment to stop negative thinking patterns.

Music plays a multifaceted role in self-care and emotional well-being. It evokes memories, fosters nostalgia, and creates bonds through shared experiences. Music also helps us process emotions and find comfort in lyrics and melodies that resonate with our feelings.

The tactile experience of visiting a local record store enhances this connection. Browsing through vinyl, feeling its weight, and listening in-store offers a sensory experience that streaming cannot replicate. This ritual supports local businesses, preserves music history, and nurtures our joy.

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Awareness Month❤️

SAD is a type of depression that usually occurs during the late fall and winter months. The onset of SAD may be due to decreased sunlight and colder weather. Some symptoms may include:
Sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
Loss of interest or pleasure in formerly enjoyable activities
Fatigue and decreased energy
Overeating (or conversely, lack of appetite)
If these describe you or a loved one this time of year, you are not alone. Talk to a mental health specialist or health care provider and find out what therapies or treatments may be available to you.

Have you ever had a terrible experience that tainted your view of everything similar? Maybe a bad seafood dish made you avoid all seafood, or a disappointing musical turned you off to the genre entirely. Even past relationships can leave you feeling jaded about finding someone new.

It’s easy to let one negative encounter overshadow future opportunities, but it’s essential to remember that every event is unique. Comparison is the thief of joy. Embrace opportunities for what they are, and you might just find the good you thought you lost!

Experiencing natural joy can be as simple as getting outside and moving your body with others. As the weather begins to change, it’s a great opportunity to take advantage of the crisp air before it gets too cold. Running helps get your blood flowing and your heart pumping, releasing hormones like endorphins that reduce stress.

It helps us to get in touch with ourselves, to celebrate the small victories of completing a run, and be grateful for our body carrying us through.
