Our new therapist, Alex Thrasher, PsyD, shares her first blog with us—a thoughtful reflection on what it really means to be vulnerable in the midst of grief.

Through a client’s story, she invites us to think about the expectations we often carry when we open up to others—and what we might discover when we choose to stay true to ourselves.

✨ Hi, I’m 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿, and I’m so excited to be joining the team at New Connections! ✨

I recently earned my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, Post, and completed my APA-accredited internship at the Center for Anxiety in NYC.

Throughout my training, I developed a strong foundation in treating anxiety disorders, trauma, relational challenges, and supporting parents and families.

What drew me to New Connections was not only the depth of clinical expertise, but also the truly collaborative and supportive atmosphere. I feel incredibly grateful to be joining a team that values both clinical excellence and compassionate care—and I can’t wait to get started!

Going back to school can be challenging for teens and young adults, especially those transitioning to college.

Many of us have little rituals we do “just in case”—knocking on wood, avoiding certain numbers, or wearing a lucky charm. These habits often feel harmless, even comforting. But what if not doing them filled you with intense fear or panic?

For people with magical thinking OCD, these actions aren’t just superstitions—they’re compulsions tied to the belief that something terrible will happen if they don’t follow through. The fear is so overwhelming, so persistent, that stopping feels impossible.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your superstitions might be something more, you’re not alone. Our latest blog breaks down the difference and what to look out for.

We all struggle... So why is men’s mental health still so overlooked?

When men stay silent or bottle up their struggles, it doesn’t just affect them—it ripples through their families, relationships, and entire communities. Stigma, stereotypes, and the pressure to “stay strong” still make it hard to seek support.

Let’s talk about the real cost of overlooking men’s mental health, what needs to change, and the role each of us can play in creating a more supportive world.

🌈 What’s the cost of hiding who you are?

Morgana Bailey stayed silent about her identity for 16 years—until a shocking study changed everything.

She discovered that LGBTQ+ individuals living in highly anti-gay communities can lose up to 12 years of life expectancy compared to those in accepting ones.

In this talk, Morgana opens up about fear, shame, and the life-saving power of living your truth.
