"Economic independence is the foundation of the only sort of freedom worth a damn." (HLM to Charles Green Shaw, 1927-12-02, Forgue 1961, p. 307)

"My favorite drinks, in order, are: beer in any form, Moselle, Burgundy, Chianti, gin and ginger-beer, and rye whiskey. I use Swedish punch only as a cocktail flavor. I dislike Scotch, and seldom drink it. It makes me vaguely uneasy. I also dislike Rhine wine, save the very best." (Forgue 1961, p. 305)

"I am prepared to admit some merit in every alcoholic beverage ever devised by the incomparable brain of man and drink them all when occasions are suitable--wine with meat, the hard liquors when my so-called soul languishes, beer to let me down gently of an evening. In other words, I am omnibibulous, or, more simply, ombibulous." (Minority Report, Item 136)
