Over 35 years ago, when Ronnie Hall was 18 and serving as a volunteer firefighter, his left leg was crushed in an accident. While doctors tried to save his leg, he ultimately needed a below-knee amputation. Ronnie shares that Dr. Conway has been his orthopedist for at least 20 years. “She has always been an advocate for me to get the best prosthetic possible.”

Ronnie joined the Annapolis Rowing Club’s Adaptive Rowing program a few years ago and loves it. He is especially grateful to Dr. Conway for being instrumental in getting him a PR2 disability rating for para-rowing so he can compete at a fairer level than he was initially rated for.

This is Ronnie’s third year competing in the sport, and he won both regional regatta races he entered. Ronnie shares some sage advice: “Find what you’re good at and do it. It adds to your life. And if you give it your all, you are enabled, not disabled.”

In the field of limb lengthening, it is generally advised to avoid lengthening children between the ages of 5 and 8. Dr. McClure was recently interviewed for Healio’s “Orthopedics Today” about a study his team did to compare lengthening and complications of children in this age bracket to children of other ages. They found average lengthening to be the same, but while there were more minor complications in the 5–8-year-olds, major complications were fairly comparable between the two groups. Dr. McClure shared that he does not see this as a green light to start lengthening children between the ages of 5 and 8, but rather a call for more research to be done to explore what is best for patients in that age range. Eleanor and Bennett were both happy to get Bananas and an accompanying book customized for kids coming to Sinai Hospital for surgery. The book helps make surgery a little less scary, and Bananas is a great companion for their treatment journey.

As many people are planning holiday travels, we wanted to share a program we learned about that might be helpful. Some of our patients have hidden disabilities that are not visible, but they still need support to travel by air. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard is recognized at over 300 airports in 70 countries and over 20 airlines to let staff know that they passengers wearing these lanyards may need extra time or support getting to their terminal, boarding the flight, on the flight, and arriving at their destination. They are available at Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Washington Dulles International airports serving many of our ICLL patients.

At BWI, free sunflower lanyards are available at information desks from 5:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and at Dulles, they can be picked up from the USO Lounge, across from Baggage Claim 12, or the Information Desks, by Baggage Claims 6 and 11, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily. You can visit your local airport’s accessibility page online to find out if they provide free Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyards and where to collect them. You can also learn more at hdsunflower.com.
