Many thanks to our panelists and to Red Emma's for a great discussion on Substance Use Disorders: A Mental Health Crisis? Here are just a few quotes from the discussion to give you a feel for what was shared. Key takeaways were that mental health and substance use disorders are deeply intertwined, harm reduction makes a difference and saves lives, there is so much more our community can do to support and uplift individuals experiencing a substance use disorder, and there are so many opportunities to work together to continue to prevent overdose deaths and connect people to much-needed resources.

Thank you so much to each of our panelists for sharing your perspectives and knowledge:
-Allison Hadel, Mental Health Therapist Intern & Certified Associate Counselor for Alcohol and Drugs
-Kevin Shird, Bestselling Author, Journalist, Public Health Advocae, and Documentary Filmmaker
-Orlando Wright, Ph.D> and LCSW-C Addiction Researcher at UMD Baltimore
-Sara Whaley, Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Overdose Response

We're looking forward to continuing this conversation and supporting the work being done in our city how we can. Thank you to our audience for so many insightful questions and for sharing your own stories of recovery 💜💚

Today is Black Balloon Day, an international awareness day observed every March 6th to remember and celebrate the lives of those lost to drug overdoses. While overdose deaths in Maryland have reached a 10-year low, substance use disorders continue to be a public health issue. Recent data show that nearly 1 in 6 Americans experiences a substance use disorder, and many people also live with co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Despite the monumental decline, overdoses remain a leading cause of death for adults under 45, highlighting the urgent need for prevention, education, and compassionate, integrated care.

Join us on March 26th as we talk with an author, a therapist, a peer, an addiction researcher, and the Mayor's Office of Overdose Prevention. This discussion will examine how SUD impacts families and communities, share real-world insights from people on the front lines of overdose prevention, and highlight research-informed strategies that support recovery and mental wellness.

Attendees will also learn about harm reduction approaches and local resources available for support.
This event is open to community members, families, advocates, and professionals interested in building healthier, more informed, and more connected communities. RSVP today at tinyurl.com/sudbmore 💜

Yesterday we met up with the awesome folks over at The Arc of Carroll County. If you aren't familiar with or , they were founded in 1955 by a small group of parents of children with developmental disabilities. At that time, these children were excluded from public education and there were no structured social, recreational or educational activities.

This group of parents was committed to forming a community-based system to provide necessary services for their children. The Arc has been a cornerstone of this community since 1955, starting in a library basement and growing into a powerhouse that serves 700+ individuals today. As NAMI Metro Baltimore expands our reach to ensure Carroll County keeps its vital, free mental health programs, we couldn’t ask for a better local ally!

Be sure to check out our NAMI Family Support Group which meets on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays! Sign up and learn more at namibaltimore.org/calendar.
