Helping Up Mission

Helping Up Mission Restoring hope. Rebuilding lives. For nearly 140 years… and counting! We are a faith based, privately funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

We provide programs and services to men and women suffering from homelessness and addiction. Our long-term, residential Spiritual Recovery Program is our flagship. Since 1995, we have helped hundreds of men break the cycle of addiction, poverty, and homelessness. The average homeless man or woman we serve has survived two decades of substance abuse and years on the streets. They come to us addicted, destitute, and dysfunctional — with no realistic capacity to recover on their own. For a man or woman in that condition, a “quick fix” doesn’t exist. Healing requires a holistic approach. By God’s grace, lives are transformed as men and women who have suffered for years — or in many cases, decades — on the streets rise up and regain their purpose, hope, and independence. As they do, all Baltimore is blessed along with them; our community experiences healing.

Throwback to 1892—long before Recovery Park became a place of hope, our founder Abraham Bradenbaugh lived just across the street. Imagine the vision he never knew he was planting.

Helping Up Mission (HUM) was honored to host Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Secretary Jake Day and Senior Policy Officer Suzanne Korff for a visit and tour of our campus. Our team, including CEO K. Daniel Stoltzfus, Chief Administrative Officer Sky Woodward and Sr. Director of Men’s Programs Brent Jones, appreciated the opportunity to share our work and the outcomes of our residential addiction recovery programs. It was a privilege to have Michael A Gaines Sr, President of Bridges CDC, join us as well to share about our developing partnership for housing our graduates as part of their development in Park Heights.

Word of Transformation: Hope

Each week we reflect on a different word to inspire and guide us.

"Be happy in your hope. Do not give up when trouble comes. Do not let anything stop you from praying."
Romans 12:12 NKJV

💛 Hope reminds us to stay positive, keep praying and trust God even in challenging times.

What an incredible day! This past Saturday, we hosted our 2nd Helping Up Mission Alumni Homecoming. Over 120 alumni and their families joined us to celebrate the gifts of life transformation. Guests enjoyed plenty of BBQ, inspiring words from speakers including Dan, Bob, Tom, Kevin, and Pastor Gary, and Mike Rallo served as our emcee. A special thank you to the Alumni Committee for making it all possible: Eric, Bryan, and Matt, with support from Brent, Rallo, Brian, Rick, and Steven. After the lunch, the celebration continued in our new Recovery Park, with group photos and games for everyone to enjoy.

Yesterday, our Center for Women & Children hosted a Health Fair in partnership with Towson University Nursing students, Johns Hopkins, the Baltimore City Health Department, the Maryland Department of Health, and GBMC. From nutrition and breast health to smoking cessation, our ladies had the opportunity to ask questions, gain insights, and take meaningful steps toward better health.

Thank you to all of our guests for providing these valuable resources and empowering our women to take charge of their well-being.

Congratulations, Eric, David, James, and Richard!
These four men have successfully completed our yearlong Spiritual Recovery Program, a great class of graduates. When asked if they ever thought they would be standing on that stage, a couple of them said no. "I'm glad I kept it short," one man said, wiping away tears, "I was getting too emotional."
