Helping Up Mission

Helping Up Mission Restoring hope. Rebuilding lives. For nearly 140 years… and counting! We are a faith based, privately funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
(338)

We provide programs and services to men and women suffering from homelessness and addiction. Our long-term, residential Spiritual Recovery Program is our flagship. Since 1995, we have helped hundreds of men break the cycle of addiction, poverty, and homelessness. The average homeless man or woman we serve has survived two decades of substance abuse and years on the streets. They come to us addicted, destitute, and dysfunctional — with no realistic capacity to recover on their own. For a man or woman in that condition, a “quick fix” doesn’t exist. Healing requires a holistic approach. By God’s grace, lives are transformed as men and women who have suffered for years — or in many cases, decades — on the streets rise up and regain their purpose, hope, and independence. As they do, all Baltimore is blessed along with them; our community experiences healing.

Today, we proudly celebrate Derrick and Jose as they complete our Spiritual Recovery Program. Their commitment reminds us that true healing happens through faith, resilience, and choosing growth—even when the journey feels hard.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
— Psalm 34:18

On this day of hope and renewal, we honor Derrick and Jose as they step into new beginnings filled with strength, purpose, and promise.

Happy Monday, Family.

As we move through this week, let us reflect on our word of transformation: Courage. Courage is not simply the absence of fear but the decision to move forward in faith despite it. Scripture reminds us, “Be brave. Be strong. Don’t give up. Expect God to get here soon” (Psalm 31:24, MSG). These words call us to hold our ground when life feels uncertain, to remain steadfast when progress feels slow and to trust that God is working even when we cannot yet see the outcome. May this week be marked by quiet strength, renewed hope and the courage to believe that what God has promised, He is faithful to fulfill.

Happy Wednesday HUM Family—and Happy New Year’s Eve!
Today we celebrate Chantel, Savannah, and Misty from the Center for Women & Children as they complete our Spiritual Recovery Program.
Their journeys remind us that transformation happens one step, one choice, and one brave moment at a time. As we close out this year and step into a new one, we’re inspired by their courage, faith, and commitment to moving forward.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” — Isaiah 43:18–19
Here’s to new beginnings, renewed hope, and lives being rebuilt—together.

For the sixth year, our CEO Dan Stoltzfus, his wife Angela and their family took over the Helping Up Mission kitchen to prepare a delicious Christmas meal for our clients. Angela’s family recipe featured hand-pounded, breaded chicken topped with homemade sauce. More than 500 portions were lovingly cooked and served to the men and women of HUM. Thank you, Dan, Angela and the Stoltzfus family, for this generous Christmas gift. The chicken parmesan was truly outstanding.
