Obesity is a complex, chronic health condition influenced by many factors beyond individual choices. In clinical research, BMI (body mass index) is used as one of several eligibility criteria and does not define what a study is about. When people across a wider range of body types take part, the evidence becomes stronger and more relevant for everyone.

The more people from different backgrounds who take part in clinical research, the more relevant and reliable the results become for everyone. Inclusive participation helps ensure that future treatments are developed with a fuller understanding of the communities they are designed for. Whatever your background, your contribution matters.

Today is World Obesity Day, a global moment to reflect on how we understand and respond to obesity. Recognised as a chronic disease by major health organizations including the WHO, obesity is driven by a combination of genetic, environmental and systemic factors that go far beyond personal habits.

Weight stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to care. Changing the conversation means treating obesity with the same seriousness and compassion as any other chronic condition.

Research continues to uncover new insights into metabolic health, and clinical studies are part of that progress.

BMI (body mass index) is sometimes used as part of the eligibility criteria for clinical studies. A BMI over 25 may be required for certain trials, but this is not the focus of the research itself. Participants are supporting studies into specific health conditions, helping researchers gather evidence that could improve treatments for many people.
