One of my favorite lines in the classical texts.
And no, it isn’t telling us to “always treat the spirit directly.”
It’s reminding us of something deeper:
The needle must be led by the practitioner’s settled Shen (spirit).
If my spirit is scattered, rushed, or distracted,
the Qi won’t know where to go.
But when my Shen is anchored, present, and sincere (held alongside clinical reasoning)— the treatment naturally reaches the root.
🌿 Don’t needle mechanically.
🌿 Don’t chase symptoms.
🌿 Don’t let technique become divorced from spirit.
Your Shen leads their Shen.
Your presence anchors their presence.
And through that, you guide them back to the Root of their Spirit.
This is the quiet, unseen half of acupuncture—
the part you can’t measure, but you can always feel.
