Earlier this week, members of the Johns Hopkins Burn Center were invited to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to provide an Advanced Burn Life Support Provider Certification Course for 15 military nurses. As a token of gratitude, every educator was presented with a challenge coin – a symbol of honor, camaraderie, and esprit de corps within military culture.

It was an honor to be invited to work closely with our military partners and we look forward to collaborating with them in the near future.

Ambulatory Care Nurses Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the amazing nurses in our ambulatory clinics!

Ambulatory nurses are the steady presence patients rely on. They guide them through complex systems; answer questions that ease anxiety; and deliver compassionate, expert care beyond the walls of the hospital. Whether they are coordinating care, educating patients and families, or serving as trusted advocates, ambulatory nurses have a lasting impact on countless lives.

Burn risks exist in every workplace including offices, kitchens, retail stores, hospitals, factories, farms, construction sites--even fire stations. Creating a burn-aware workplace doesn’t require significant changes, say Johns Hopkins Burn Center experts, but some simple steps can build safer habits over time: https://www.ameriburn.org/prevention/national-burn-awareness-week

We would like to thank our entire team for their remarkable effort during Winter Storm Fern and the wintry conditions afterward. Their brilliance shines brightest when the need is highest, and we know they will always rise to meet any challenge. We also know how difficult it can be to balance the needs of families, pets and loved ones in severe weather, so we want to especially thank the more than 300 who stayed at Hotel Bayview (some for multiple nights!).

Once again, but certainly not for the last time, thanks to everyone for being incredible team members and carers.

Congratulations to Dr. Debraj Mukherjee on receiving the 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award! The award is given to individuals who demonstrate Dr. King’s values of service, equality and selflessness through their volunteerism.

Dr. Mukherjee is a champion of the 10-workshop interactive Peace Education Program (PEP), which focuses on themes such as appreciation and inner strength. He has deployed it throughout the Baltimore and Washington region, including across the Johns Hopkins medical campus, to recently incarcerated women, and to low-income senior citizens. Every week, he sets aside time to provide this empowering program at no charge to students and staff, cancer patients and their family members, and others who represent some of the most neglected or vulnerable members of society.

The Courtyard Café was standing room only as patients, visitors and staff enjoyed a musical performance by medical resident and electric cellist Dr. Iain Forrest. The mid-day concert offered an hour of music, reflection and connection, as well an opportunity for staff to reset and recharge.

“Music has a way of bypassing the clinical and going straight to the heart,” he says. “I’ve seen firsthand how it can reach people in ways that words or medicine sometimes can’t.”

Thank you, Dr. Forrest, for this very special performance. We can’t wait for the next one!
