Ascension Saint Agnes celebrates LOVED Award winner, Captain Reed!

“As I was walking out of the hospital yesterday, ready to head home, I noticed an older woman standing near the entrance, visibly distressed. Something about her expression made me stop—she looked lost and overwhelmed. I walked over to her and gently asked if she needed help. She explained, almost in tears, that the valet had already gone home for the day, and she had no idea where her car or keys were. She looked tired, confused, and alone.

I told her not to worry, I’d find someone who could help. I stepped back inside and immediately spotted Captain Chantell Reed at the Main Entrance, as warm and welcoming as ever, greeting visitors with her usual kindness. I quickly explained the situation and mentioned I was in a bit of a rush to pick up my daughter. Without missing a beat, Captain Reed smiled and said, “Of course, let me go see what’s going on.” I knew then that this sweet woman was in the best possible hands.

The next day, I made it a point to find Captain Reed and thank her. What she told me afterward truly touched my heart.

The elderly woman had come to visit her sister, who was seriously ill and a patient in our hospital. She had been carrying the weight of knowing she had to return home, out of state, with no family nearby to stay with her sister. On top of the emotional toll, she found herself stranded, unable to walk far or find her car without help. She felt completely helpless.

Captain Reed didn’t just help her find her keys or locate her car, she sat with her, listened to her, and reassured her that she wasn’t alone. When the visitor tried to offer money as a thank-you, Captain Reed kindly declined. Instead, she asked if she could pray with her. The two women prayed together, the visitor then asked for a hug, and quietly slipped some money into Captain Reed’s pocket without her knowing.

Later that evening, Captain Reed discovered the money. And rather than keeping it, she turned that act of generosity into another act of kindness. After work, she stopped by the Dollar Store and thoughtfully put together a beautiful basket of goodies for the patient—the visitor’s sister. The next day, she bought a bouquet of flowers and personally delivered both to the patient's room.

This is who Captain Reed is. She doesn’t just wear a badge, she leads with compassion, empathy, and an open heart. She lives our values not just when people are watching, but especially when they’re not. Her humility, strong work ethic, and quiet acts of kindness remind us of the kind of impact one person can make, simply by caring.

Captain Reed deserves to be recognized, not only for this beautiful moment, but for the way she shows up every single day—with integrity, warmth, and love.”

The LOVED Award recognizes those who go beyond the scope of their jobs in order to provide care or assistance to a patient, visitor, or co-worker and demonstrate living our values. Congratulations and thank you, Captain Reed!
