August is ! 🩸

There are approximately 600 Sickle Cell patients in the DMV area that rely on regular blood transfusions to keep them out of the hospital, yet there are only 79 Black blood donors committed to supporting these patients.

Without blood donation, many patients wouldn’t be here today!

In honor of , I figured I’d nerd out a lil bit! Sickle Cell patients often develop antibodies due to the countless units of blood they receive. Each person that donates blood has their own specific antigen profile on their Red Blood Cells. Antigens are proteins that are recognized by the immune system. If the patient lacks a particular antigen on their own cells, their immune system will see the donated blood as foreign, make an antibody to it, and destroy it.

This is why blood types are important. The more antibodies a patient has, the harder it is to find compatible blood that is safe. People from similar ethnic backgrounds inherit similar antigen profiles, decreasing the chances of antibody formation, and making it easier to find compatible blood.

Out of the small percentage of people eligible to donate blood, less than 3% are black. These numbers aren’t high enough to support Sickle Cell patients, the majority of which are black, who regularly depend on blood to stay healthy. There are blood drives happening everyday! Check out the list on website, and register to donate & save a life!

People with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) produce both normal hemoglobin A (protein that transports oxygen in blood), and abnormal hemoglobin S ➡️ AS.
:
People with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) only produce abnormal hemoglobin S ➡️ SS/SC.
:
If two individuals with Sickle Cell Trait have a baby, there’s a 50% chance of the baby having SCT ➡️ AS; a 25% chance of the baby having Sickle Cell Disease ➡️ SS/SC; and a 25% chance of the baby having neither Sickle Cell Trait or Disease ➡️ AA.

This is why is so important! When you come donate blood on June 26th , you’ll not only be saving lives, but you’ll also find out your ! Click link in bio to register! 🩸
