On Wednesday, Executive Director Lauren Eaton spoke at GBMC HealthCare’s “Every Mind Matters: Embracing Neurodiversity” panel alongside Melissa Rosenberg (Autism Society of Maryland), Rose Heggs (Jemicy School), and Dr. Denise Warren, PsyD.

Panelists highlighted simple, impactful accommodations, like quiet spaces, dim lighting, and extra processing time, that support autistic and neurodiverse individuals and enhance experiences for all.

Thank you to GBMC - Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Gilchrist Cares for the opportunity to be part of this important conversation!

Itineris is proud to kick off Autism Acceptance Month by sharing a powerful story from Monday’s closing reception for the “Art in Full Spectrum” exhibition, held at the House of Delegates. Our talented client and artist, Claire, engaged with several legislators, including Senator Sara Love, Delegate Michele Guyton, MD District 42B, and even Lt. Governor Aruna Miller.

During the event, Lt. Governor Miller asked Claire about her artistic inspiration. Claire shared that she paints both what she observes and what she envisions in her mind’s eye. Lt. Governor Miller remarked that the wisteria featured in Claire’s painting was one of her favorite flowers, and took time to tour the gallery and appreciate the artwork on display.

The reception area was filled with artists and their families, so speakers had to gather in the hallway to ensure everyone could join the celebration. Maryland Speaker of the House Joseline Peña-Melnyk and Maryland Department of Disabilities Secretary Carol Beatty also shared remarks, congratulating the artists for their acceptance into the exhibition and for sharing their talents with the Maryland community.

We are incredibly proud of Claire for submitting her painting, representing Itineris, and shining a spotlight on the contributions of autistic adults through her passion and creativity.

Happy World Autism Day and Autism Acceptance Month! Itineris joins self-advocates, families, and organizations worldwide in celebrating and recognizing the dignity and worth of all autistic individuals, and continues to emphasize our dedication to empowering the adults we serve to live their most meaningful lives.

The United Nations General Assembly designated April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007. Thanks to self-advocates, human rights organizations, and thought leaders, awareness of autism and neurodiversity has grown exponentially. We are honored to have played a part in the worldwide goal of autistic individuals advocating for themselves and fully participating in their lives and in their communities. We continue to affirm that autistic adults are integral to our collective progress toward a more diverse future.

Today, our Meal Prep clients prepared their lunches at Ethel's Creole Kitchen with Chef Ed. Donning their aprons, they stepped into the kitchen to cook grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for one another, sharing both the work and the joy of the experience.

They practiced valuable cooking skills, from seasoning dishes just right to using an immersion blender, while building confidence and supporting each other.

Clients truly enjoyed this hands-on, collaborative experience, gaining a meaningful glimpse into life in a professional kitchen while creating a delicious meal together.

A heartfelt thank you to Chef Ed and Ethel’s Creole Kitchen for so generously opening their space and continuing to support Itineris. It’s always a pleasure to learn from and work alongside such a talented and welcoming team.

We are proud to recognize Itineris client Kelsey for demonstrating outstanding leadership, confidence, and skill-building by independently hosting a Chicken Noodle Soup cooking demonstration for her peers.

With support from her Personal Supports staff, Kelsey planned and prepared the entire activity: she purchased ingredients and collaborated on a flyer and sign-up sheet. She arrived ready to lead, guiding peers through each step, measuring ingredients, and delegating tasks to encourage teamwork and participation.

Through this experience, Kelsey not only shared an activity meaningful to her but also modeled communication, organization, and leadership skills, building confidence in herself and her peers who participated.

Thank you, Kelsey, for showing what client-led learning and empowerment look like in action. We look forward to more opportunities where clients can teach and grow together.

As we celebrate World Behavior Analysis Day, we recognize and applaud the dedication of our Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), who consistently demonstrate patience, professionalism, and resilience, even in the face of challenges.

Their work centers on supporting individuals in building confidence, increasing independence, and feeling more understood. Progress is not always immediate or highly visible, but each step forward represents meaningful growth and achievement.

We are proud of our BSS team’s commitment to person-centered applied behavior analysis and deeply appreciate the expertise, compassion, and integrity they bring to their work each day as they empower autistic adults.

On Thursday, March 12th, clients, family members, staff, and others from Itineris gathered in Annapolis to join other supporters in a rally advocating for the protection of funding for services through the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA). Itineris’s ongoing commitment throughout this legislative session, combined with the collective efforts of our partners and supporters, demonstrates the power of unified advocacy and the impact we can have when we speak with one voice.

On Friday, March 13th, the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee finalized the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget for the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), which includes a 2% reduction in reimbursement rates for community providers, including Itineris. This reduction is compounded by a 0% rate increase in the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget, even as operating costs - including energy, utilities, transportation, food, and competitive wages for employees - continue to rise. These budget decisions place significant strain on providers like Itineris and are making it increasingly difficult to sustain the high-quality services on which our community depends.

We are deeply grateful to our partners and supporters who rallied alongside us in this critical effort. Special thanks to MACS, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, and leaders like Laura Howell, Greg Snyder, and Rachel London for fostering unity and resilience within our community. We also appreciate legislators such as Chairman Guy Guzzone, Senator McCray, Chairman Ben Barnes, and Delegate Emily Shetty for their unwavering commitment to lessening the impact of these budget changes on those we serve.

We are profoundly grateful to the advocates, self-advocates, families, clients, staff, and partner organizations who raised their voices on March 12th and throughout this legislative session. Your advocacy is indispensable, and together, we will continue to advocate for the protection of these vital services for our community.

We are incredibly proud of our Neurodiversity and Advocacy Partner, Katelyn, for testifying in Annapolis in support of legislation that helps protect continuity of services for the people we serve.

By sharing her expertise and speaking directly with lawmakers, Katelyn helped highlight the real-world impact that waiver disenrollment can have on autistic adults and others who rely on these essential supports.

Her leadership and advocacy help ensure our clients’ voices are heard where it matters most, so the services they depend on remain stable and accessible. We’re grateful for the passion and courage she brings to this work every day.
