Nova Institute for Health

Nova Institute for Health We are a heart-centered think tank that takes action for the good of people, places, and the planet. Negative comments are responded to on a case-by-case basis.

We see a world where health is valued as our most basic and essential asset and where people, places, and the planet flourish for the benefit of all. A world where health underlies all of society’s decisions and actions, where the many interconnected determinants of well-being are recognized, and where we place greater value on integration, creativity, and wisdom. A world where people enjoy meaningful and fulfilling lives—no matter where on Earth they live, work, or play. The Nova Institute for Health is a heart-centered think tank that takes action for the good of people, places, and the planet. Our mission is to catalyze new ideas in health, understand the complex network of factors that influence health, and promote the well-being of individuals, communities, and the planet. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Nova Institute was founded in 2007 by Professor Brian Berman, MD, a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. Cultivating a broad, transdisciplinary community of thought leaders and partners, the Nova Institute has established an international reputation as a place for exploration and discovery. We use social media to engage a global audience of researchers, thought leaders, academics, healthcare professionals, and more. We engage with our audience thoughtfully and professionally. The Institute will like, share, and comment on work from scholars, fellows, and other innovative and relevant organizations. We make every effort to be transparent about our involvement in certain projects and initiatives while remaining sensitive to our donors, funding organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders.

“I learned that in some Indigenous cultures, when a sick person goes to a healer, the first question they are asked is, ‘when did you stop singing and dancing?’ There's a lot of truth in this question"

In our latest Insight Collaborative for Mental Well-Being interview, Dr. Federica Lari, PhD — cell biologist, contemplative practices instructor, and creator of Planetary Health Yoga — shares how reconnecting with ourselves and the natural world offers a path to personal and ecological healing.

Drawing on science, yoga, mindfulness, and deep inquiry, Federica sees many of today’s intertwined social, ecological, and psychological crises stemming from a profound disconnection from life and nature. Her work invites us to rebuild that bond, beginning with our bodies and breath, moving through nourishment and awareness, and ultimately recognizing our interdependence with all living beings.

"Even in the darkest moments of the year, the return of light is already underway."

In the latest Reflections from Our Founder, we're reminded of the importance of reconnecting with the rhythms of the universe. In a world where chronic stress, disconnection, and burnout are so common, aligning with the natural cycles of light and darkness—and reconnecting with ourselves, each other, and the Earth—may be the most radical act of healing.

"Creating spaces where people can come together, share their pain, and support one another from a compassionate place is essential."

In our latest Insight Collaborative for Mental Well-Being interview, Dr. James Gordon, founder of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, explores the transformative power of mind-body medicine.

Drawing on decades of research and real-world experience, Dr. Gordon discusses how practices like meditation, guided imagery, movement, group support, and self-care can help individuals and communities heal from trauma, stress, and chronic illness. By reconnecting the mind and body, these interventions foster resilience, self-regulation, and a sense of empowerment.

We're thrilled to congratulate Maria Parazo Rose on the launch of an innovative new reporting project on Indigenous land return models and their outcomes for communities around the world!

Over the next 18 months, supported by a grant to Nova from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Maria will investigate land return case studies from nations including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Colombia, Finland, Ireland, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, and the Philippines and publish her reporting in top outlets worldwide. With support from Nova’s global network of Scholars and Fellows, she’ll also assemble a cohort of land return practitioners and experts from tribal communities, nonprofits, and state organizations to identify successful strategies and exchange insights on effective models for implementation. The cohort will share its findings at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York City in 2027.

This exciting initiative will expand and deepen Maria’s Nova Media Fellowship project, which has already included extensive reporting for Grist Magazine on climate and health-related inequities for Indigenous communities in the U.S. and around the world.

Congratulations, Maria! Learn more about her project: https://ow.ly/Nm8J50XxHMN

⭐ Join us for the free, virtual 2025 Nova Annual Conference, “Cultivating Connections: A Path to Transformation,” on December 11. Recognizing the healing power of connection—with ourselves, each other, and the natural world—this event will examine more integrated approaches that respond to today's complex, interdependent challenges.

Through two dynamic sessions with renowned speakers, we’ll explore how relational, care-driven approaches can rebuild trust, belonging, and well-being in support of more equitable, sustainable futures. We'll also invite deeper reflection on mending cultural and spiritual disconnection for shared flourishing.

Last week, we were thrilled to bring together our Nova Scholars and Fellows community for our annual meeting in Baltimore. It is always heartening to gather with this diverse, interdisciplinary group dedicated to advancing the health of people, places, and the planet.

We were also honored to welcome special guests john a. powell (Othering and Belonging Institute), Julie Rovner (KFF Health News), Ashwath Narayanan (Social Currant), and Amanda Yarnell (Harvard University, joining virtually). Together, we explored how to bridge across divides and meet audiences where they are with empathy, connection, and fact-based storytelling.

We're so grateful for this incredible group of thinkers and change makers. Our hearts are full, and we're already looking forward to next year's meeting! 💛

🎥 Watch now: Recordings are available from the latest Nova Campfire, "In Search of Consciousness: New Frontiers in Science, Wisdom, and the Nature of Reality." With our terrific panelists, this event invited us to consider consciousness not as a byproduct of the brain, but as foundational to reality itself.

Thanks to all who made this dynamic and engaging Campfire such a success! See more: https://ow.ly/YMbp50X7Jlu

We're thrilled to announce our 2025-26 cohort of Nova Media Fellows! This year, the fellowship includes three journalists and two nonprofit newsrooms: Juhie Bhatia, Tasmiha Khan, the NPR Climate Desk, Reasons to be Cheerful, and Rochelle Sharpe.

Their ambitious, year-long projects will connect the dots between science, health, and well-being. Their reporting will reimagine the built environment to combat loneliness, calculate the human toll of climate change, explore the health impacts of environmental noise, and much more. At a time when science is under threat, their stories will highlight the complex factors that shape health and lift up evidence-based solutions to build greater understanding and inspire action. We're honored to support their work.

Research funding frozen, environmental protections under threat, truth and trust falling away, lives and livelihoods on the line. For many, our current moment feels like a lot like leaping from a trapeze—mid-air, no net, just uncertainty.

As Nova's founder, Professor Brian Berman, reflects, it feels as though we've launched from one trapeze and haven't caught the next one yet—maybe we can't even see it.

“That moment when the trapeze artist lets go—there is no going back, only forward. A wild swing across a vast chasm. Such fear. Such trust. Such bravery.”

At Nova, we're living in this liminal space with open hands and open hearts. Our dynamic Scholars and Fellows community is working across sectors to build what comes next—grounded in science, compassion, and the courage to keep imagining.

What emerges between chaos and becoming?
