My final clients of 2020 serendipitously gave birth in early March, just before lockdowns and hospital visitor restrictions. I had planned some time off for family commitments and travel, and it turned out to be perfectly timed (well…not the travel part!). I had been quietly working on my degree for a few years, and I focused my energies on my classes and took the opportunity to think carefully about my path forward, which led me to consider a significant shift in focus.

It has been an honor to serve so many wonderful families during the past twelve years since I completed my doula training! I have learned so much and been deeply grateful to be a small part of the intimate and profound experience of birth. My work as a doula served as a catalyst to learn more about feminism, power structures and the layers of oppression experienced by marginalized groups in our society. After spending this last decade supporting and advocating for my clients, I will be building upon that knowledge and work by attending University of Baltimore School of Law this fall. Through law school, I hope to acquire skills that will allow me to engage in a broader level of patient-rights advocacy. I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from doula work in order to focus on this new endeavor.

Thank you to each and every family who allowed me in their birth space, to every birth worker who has been a part of my journey, and to my family and friends who provide endless support and encouragement, and will surely see me through these next three years as I take on the new challenges of law school!

Who doesn’t love a good preggo-belly dance video?!? I’m going to post some more good ones in the comments. Feel free to share your faves, too! Dancing is great fun, exercise, and can help cope with discomfort and move baby down during labor, too!

Whether you’re currently pregnant or not, these are great tips for picking an OB/GYN, or figuring out if the one you have is worth keeping!

Over the years, I have frequently been asked by women how they should pick an obstetrician-gynecologist. Or, sometimes they will ask how to tell if the one they are currently going to is any good. …

Great advice from The Millennial Matriarch as she celebrates the births of her babies!

It’s BIRTHDAY WEEKEND in the Thomas household 🎉 and the same weekend that 2 and 5 years ago I had a little girl and a little boy in the most empowering ways... on my terms! This photo is the reflection of the WARRIOR I became the day I Gave birth to Ava who will be 5 on Sunday. I gave birth to BOTH of my babies in a hospital with one of the highest cesarean rates in Maryland but managed to have one of lowest intervention births my doctor had ever attended. IT’S POSSIBLE TO GIVE BIRTH [and live life] on your terms! ⠀
Here are my top 3 tips for a low intervention Hospital Birth: ⠀
1. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS⠀
And make sure that you go over all of them with your OB before delivery day. Spend time during your monthly and weekly appointments asking questions, getting to know your provider and how they work as well as being clear about your goals during labor and delivery ⠀
2. HIRE SUPPORT ⠀
Contrary to popular belief. Doctors and midwives jobs are To keep you SAFE, not comfortable. And labor can be an intense, emotional, and physically demanding process. Hiring a doula or investing in proper education like the courses can help to ensure that you have physical spiritual and emotional support even when your physician or midwife are out of the room. ⠀
3. MAKE A PLAN⠀
You know what they say about plans... but in birth they matter too. Fitting hand in hand with #1, create a WRITTEN plan that outlines all of the details about you, your health, and your goals and wishes during labor and delivery. Hospital staff changes are inevitable but your plan shouldn’t be. Of course be flexible in the event of an emergency, but if things are going well, there’s no need for a misstep because of miscommunication. Write your birth vision! ⠀

Tag a mama who could use these tips! 😘 Happy Friday ya’ll!

Peak human endurance.

The average person can burn up to 4,000 calories. Expectant mothers regularly reach or pass the same limits as triathletes and extreme distance runners.

What a great visual!

Our bodies are amazing! From fingertip to complete, your body is in the process of softening and opening for birth. Not only that, but baby’s head is soft and their skull bones overlap, so it molds and rocks, navigating their way earthside. “Soft and open, soft and open”... it’s a good mantra to have during birth!
