When Is Glaucoma Surgery Needed?

Some recent studies indicate that a laser procedure known as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) may be equally as effective as glaucoma eye drops for lowering internal eye pressure. This laser surgery might be considered a primary treatment, particularly for people who find it difficult to comply with the strict, regular schedule needed for administering eye drops.

Another procedure called a trabeculectomy creates an artificial drainage area. This method is used in cases of advanced glaucoma where optic nerve damage has occurred and the IOP continues to soar.

A third common option is a shunt, a device that a surgeon implants in your eye to improve fluid drainage.

International Ophthalmology

Dr. Robin has been instrumental in developing and establishing the glaucoma service at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Southern India. Aravind is the busiest eye hospital in the world. His work there has been instrumental in developing self-sustaining eye care, a increased awareness of glaucoma, and fostering research and clinical ties that have bettered patients in both India and the developing world. His work has been critical to the development of Mitomycin C for glaucoma surgery, new forms of visual fields to better diagnose glaucoma, as well as a better understanding of both the prevalence of glaucoma as well as other eye diseases.

Glaucoma is the name given to many different diseases. Open-angle glaucoma is one of many forms of glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma, unlike other diseases, usually has no symptoms. Most forms of open-angle glaucoma have an eye pressure which is too high for a person’s eye. Glaucoma causes vision loss and blindness if left untreated. The visual loss begins in the side vision and is not noticed. It progresses slowly, so that it is usually impossible to detect changes in side vision until they are large and dangerous. Our goal is to treat the eye pressure in hopes of permanently maintaining your vision similar to the vision that you had when you were first diagnosed.
