We are proud to recognize Allie Chenowith as Employee of the Quarter at the Rehabilitation Institute at Sinai.

This recognition reflects what so many colleagues shared: Allie’s impact reaches across the entire Institute.

She supports a wide range of research initiatives—from IRB submissions and recruitment to data collection and dissemination—while also transforming clinical ideas into posters, manuscripts, and presentations that elevate our work.

Behind the scenes, Allie builds and maintains the systems that keep everything running smoothly, strengthening efficiency, organization, and collaboration across teams.

Colleagues consistently describe her as innovative, dependable, and solutions-oriented. Whether developing workflows, supporting grants and publications, or creating educational resources, she brings initiative and precision to everything she does.

Equally important is how she shows up for others—with kindness, professionalism, and a collaborative spirit that makes teammates feel supported and valued.

Across nominations, one message was clear: Allie makes our team stronger, more connected, and more successful.

Congratulations to Gidon Amsellem, a first-year medical student at George Washington University, who will spend eight weeks this summer with the ABBEL Research Division as a recipient of the Beverly and Jerome Fine Summer Research Fellowship.

During the fellowship, Gidon will contribute to our ongoing research project, “Postoperative Knee Range of Motion Recovery Patterns in Limb Length Discrepancy Correction.” The project is led by Anil Bhave, PT, and Gidon will be mentored by Dr. Jordan Wickstrom. He will also develop a conference abstract and research poster based on his work.

We are excited to welcome Gidon to the team and look forward to a productive and impactful summer of research.

🎉 Congratulations to Tania Brown, PT, MPT, on the submission and acceptance of her abstract “Living the Experience – African American and Multiple Sclerosis: A Case Study” for poster presentation at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers Annual Meeting 2026 in Charlotte! ✨

A combined regimen of HIIT and balance rehabilitation led to meaningful improvements in gait, balance, fatigue, and overall quality of life for an African American individual with MS.

The study also highlights disparities in Multiple Sclerosis outcomes and supports targeted rehabilitation approaches to improve functional performance and daily living.

🎉 Celebrating an incredible milestone! 🎉

Please join us in congratulating Eva Bhandary, MD on matching into the Pediatrics Residency Program at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore! 🧸

Eva has been an integral part of the ABBEL team over the past 8 months, contributing to a wide range of projects including Infant Norms, Child Norms, the Pediatric Limb Lengthening Project, and the Permissive Diet study. From supporting data entry and reviewing research products to assisting with grant development, Eva has truly done it all.

Her dedication, curiosity, and willingness to jump in wherever needed have made a lasting impact on our team and our research.
We are so grateful to have been part of her journey and can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes in this next chapter.

Congratulations, Eva — your future in pediatrics is so bright! 💙✨

Behind the Scenes: WBAL Interview

We welcomed Breana Ross and the crew from WBAL-TV 11 News into our lab to highlight our Infant Norms project and the importance of early motor development research.

This opportunity not only allowed us to showcase the technology and purpose behind the study, but also helps us reach more Baltimore families. Increasing participation is essential as we work to build strong, representative norms for infant sitting balance and improve early recognition of motor differences.

Grateful to share this work with our community — and excited to welcome more little ones to the lab!

📚 Resident Journal Club – March

This month, our residents reviewed a study examining the relationship between gabapentin prescriptions and cognitive outcomes in adults with chronic low back pain.

Gaurav Majmudar, PGY-4 resident, led a discussion on this retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network database. After propensity score matching, researchers analyzed over 26,000 patients with chronic low back pain to evaluate the incidence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment within 10 years of diagnosis.

The study found that patients prescribed gabapentin had a higher incidence of both dementia and mild cognitive impairment compared with those not prescribed the medication. Risk was particularly elevated in non-elderly adults and increased with greater prescription frequency.

An important discussion on how large health data networks and longitudinal research can inform safer prescribing and improve long-term patient care.

A look back at the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Meeting 2026 in San Juan, Puerto Rico!

Our team had an incredible week sharing research, connecting with colleagues from across the field, and celebrating the exciting work happening in physiatry and rehabilitation science.

Between poster sessions and presentations, we also had the chance to enjoy the beautiful sights of San Juan, making this year’s meeting one to remember.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our posters and joined the conversation!
