Opioid use is closely tied to experienced trauma. It is not an illness that can just be treated with medication and needs more than groups and programs. It is the path of coping when no other options exist.

My patients, over the past 18 years, tell me they took opioids to keep from thinking about their trauma. Most experienced trauma as a child or adolescent and found that drugs and alcohol helped .. at least at first. Then life took over and addiction was a way of life.

Thank goodness i was able to help over 70% of my patients deal with the memories of past traumatic events. They regained confidence and in most cases, found new lives. What is missing is resources to help support recovery so they don't resort to old habits in order to survive.

What is it like to be part of a miracle? On this holiday of Hanukah we remember the miracle that occurred long ago in ancient Jerusalem when one small jug of oil burned fo 8 days. The people rededicated the Temple in the midst of a miracle of light.

So, where is the miracle of light today? Is it possible that miracles still happen? What if you could be freed of the nightmares? What if the memories of darkness -- past traumatic events that are always swirling in your mind -- could turn to light?

That is the miracle that happens when you find Your Hidden Door. That is today's miracle of light. It could be yours. Yourhiddendoor@gmail.com

Sunday night starts the beginning of a new year and a new opportunity to make a commitment to accept change and begin anew. Yes, the Jewish new year called Rosh Hashanah starts Sunday night ... the Bible announces each day as starting the night before which is amazing when we consider how many people need to battle their way through darkness before discovering the light of hope in a new day -- kind of like the way you feel when you open your eyes for the first time after giving up drugs or alcohol. The same way a person feels when they open their eyes after a session to find that the nightmares and feelings of guilt are gone for the first time in years.

This new year celebrates the creation of the world ... a world in which each person has value and the opportunity to discover his or her purpose in life. When I talk with my patients and help them leave the darkness of addiction to the light of a world without drugs, they often wonder, "Who Am I?" "How did I get here and where am I going?" They work hard to progress One Day At A Time while discoverying their unique place in the world.

It took 7 days for G-d to complete the path of creation and a lifetime for each person to discover their own place in this beautiful world. Growth and recovery progress over time -- there is no short-cut to creation. But there is a process, a path, a potential for healing.

I am blessed to have developed a way to help so many find their Hidden Door, their path to a new day. I look forward to sharing this amazing and effective intervention and urge everyone who wants to win the war against addiction to bless the new year with a willingness to try something new.

I wish everyone a beautiful new year in a world that is blessed with light and culminates in a Sabbath, a day in which we can sit back and take stock of our part of bringing light from darkness. Shanah Tovah -- Happy New Year.

What if Addiction is a "Curable" disease? I read a post yesterday that frightened me: the professional community does not believe Addiction can be cured. This affliction is viewed as a lifetime disease that will never go away and will always threaten your potential for life. But I question this. I really don't believe this to be true. Now, I might be the only one out there who believes that Addiction is "Curable" but I have been crazy enough to be different before. And besides, I figured out that by addressing the underlying trauma that contributed to initial and continued drug use, the individual can grow past drugs and no longer need them to block out the terrible memories. I believe it because I've seen it happen for over 70% of my mentally ill addicted patients. www.yourhiddendoor.com.

Who is brave enough to face the memories? It takes a lot of strength to face the person who hurt you and a lot of courage to deal with the memory that has plagued you for so many years. Some people are too scared. Some are hesitant but find the courage to regain control over their lives. And some are able to look them in the eye, tell them off, give back the pain, and start living.

Which are you?

I can take you on a short journey in your mind that may help like nothing else has ever helped before. I figured out how to treat the memories by helping you find Your Hidden Door. But you have to do the hard part -- you have to face them. I hope you are brave enough to take the next step. You can't bury the memory -- you might try but it keeps popping up. You can pretend it never happened but the memory returns and repeats over and over and over.

That's what trauma is -- the memory. And it will haunt you until you find Your Hidden Door. This is the way out of the memory loop that plays over and over and over. It is there and I can help you find it. Take the step toward healing. Let me help you find Your Hidden Door.

Cognitive Treatment for Trauma & Substance Abuse

Research -- and experience -- point to trauma as being one of the primary reasons people turn to drug use. My patients, most of whom experienced childhood trauma that led to a lifetime of drug use, point to the memory of the event(s) as the factor that contributed to initial and continued drug use. I believe that recovery is very difficult to achieve and maintain unless this memory is addressed and dealt with once and for all.

Cognitive Confrontation, the intervention I developed to address these memories, works well for about 70% of my patients. They describe the memory as a recurring loop that plays repeatedly in their minds and which interferes with their ability to achieve success in life. Self-confidence is reduced and individuals tend to see themselves as victims their entire lives -- always at the mercy of others just as they were at the mercy of someone else when they were kids. I help them deal with the impact of this trauma by helping them escape the memory loop -- by helping them find their Hidden Door.

This is a cognitive intervention that takes only 15 minutes so is ideal for the homeless patients I work with. It is amazing when someone opens their eyes after the intervention and ask, "What did you do? I feel lighter. It's gone!" As one 67 year old man said, "I never had a day go by without thinking about what happened to me as a kid. Last night I had my first good night's sleep in my life. Now, I don't think about it any more." And I love telling the story about one of my patients who would never engage in treatment but who one day made the decision to talk. He stopped using drugs in 3 months and returned to work. He lost the job after one day because he lost his temper and hit one of the bosses. He came in the next day, saying, "Hey, Dr. Howard. I think I might need my psych meds, too."

I want to share this intervention to help others escape the memory of trauma. Let me know your thoughts on trying something new to finally help people find their Hidden Door. www.yourhiddendoor.com facebook.com/HSICounselingandCareConnection

I believe that the best way to beat addiction is to deal with the trauma that contributed to the initial drug use. A few years ago I asked the directors of large and small mental health companies in the Baltimore area about this issue. They all said that they knew that trauma was one of the biggest reasons people start using drugs. And when I asked them, "What do you do to treat it?" do you want to guess what every one of them said?

"Nothing" That's right, they all said they did nothing because there is no treatment that will work for their patients -- homeless, long-term addicts with underlying mental health issues -- who traditionally don't stay in a program long enough to make a difference.

So, let's be honest. If you are a substance abuse and/or mental health professional working with this population, what are you doing to help them eliminate the negative impact of the memory of their trauma? I know the answer, "Nothing, because there is nothing to do."

Until now. Help them find their hidden door. Let me help you show them the way www.yourhiddendoor.com drhoward@yourhiddendoor.com

Do you believe in miracles? How about the miracle of discovering how to help victims of trauma find peace? The miracles continue each and every day as I complete the intervention and hold my breath and wait ... as almost always the patient looks at me and says, "I feel lighter." "I feel different." "The pain is gone." I hold my breath because I still have trouble believing that healing from the memories of trauma is real.

One older man came in two weeks after the intervention and said, "I used to think about what happened when I was a kid every day of my life. Since that session, I haven't thought about it once."

And recently, a young lady who said the session wasn't long enough to tell about everything that happened to her, ended by saying, "I never thought I could let my pain go … I gave it back … it's his now." A miracle that can be yours.

The memories of traumatic life events repeat in our minds like a never-ending loop -- until you find your hidden door -- the way out of the loop and back to a full and meaningful life. Isn't it time you found your hidden door?

My most memorable clinical moment in healing trauma during 2021 -- Definitely worth sharing:
A 67 year old patient participated in a Cognitive Confrontation exercise during his second session. He experienced serious childhood trauma which haunted him his whole life. During his 5th and final session he said:
"I've thought about what happened to me my whole life. I don't know what happened, but I have thought about it once since our session. I have been sleeping all night for the first time in my life."

This, together with many similar stories, parents keeping their newborns because they are no longer using drugs, and grandparents reuniting with their families -- these are the joys of successful mental health treatment.

Looking forward to 2022.

I developed an intervention that can stop the cycle of childhood trauma that has destroyed more children than all the wars ever fought in this world. The children hurt so badly grew to be parents, as well, and often repeated behaviors they learned when young -- and now their children knew trauma, as well.

There is finally hope but only if we open our eyes, admit to ourselves that something in our families is broken, and take a big step toward finding the hidden door that will make it possible for those broken by abuse to find themselves and heal.

My intervention focuses on the memory .. not on the event. The victim has the opportunity to confront their abuser and release their pain. The Victim grows into the Victor and is able to find their Hidden Door ... the way out of the repeating memory of the actual traumatic events that haunted them their entire lives,

The memories of trauma play over and over and over in our minds until you find Your Hidden Door -- it only appears when you realize that you can control your own destiny … when you no longer have to be the victim of some terrible event. But you will need to be brave enough to try something new -- to take the first step toward emotional freedom.

Let me help you find Your Hidden Door. As I shared in the past, “He who saves one life is as if he has saved the entire world.” (Ethics of Our Fathers) That one life you save could be your own or that of your child. The step by step guide for this amazing intervention is available at www.yourhiddendoor.com.
