Back in the classroom—this time sharing the clinical perspective. 🦅

I had the opportunity to speak with BSW students at Coppin State University about what Trauma-Informed Care truly looks like in practice—beyond theory and into real client work, real systems, and real life.

At Restoring Destiny Mental Health Services, this is the foundation of our work—providing culturally competent, trauma-informed care that meets women where they are and supports real healing.

Bipolar disorder doesn’t always look like the extremes we see in the media.

For many Black women, it wears a mask of “high-functioning” survival. It looks like:
• Pushing through the exhaustion.
• Showing up for everyone else while feeling empty inside.
• Suffering in silence because you’ve been taught to be “strong.”

Policy largely shapes what we have access to - healthcare, education, and our cost of living. Depression and anxiety don’t always exist in a vacuum, in fact, our environment has a big impact on how we feel. This is why therapy should be viewed from a multi theoretical approach, including a social justice and political lens, because telling people to “take care” without addressing the systems that are leading to pain misses the mark.
