"In growing up I had to come to terms with the sadness that hangs over my life, and I had to find the gifts in sadness to become a stronger person." - Jacob Campbell, who was ten months old on 9/11/01, the day his mother died in the World Trade Center

It has been years of healing — for me, and for America.

"Kintsugi (“golden repair”) ... celebrates each artifact’s unique history by emphasizing its fractures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them. Kintsugi often makes the repaired piece even more beautiful than the original, revitalizing it with new life."

We explore kintsugi art, or kintsukuroi, a centuries old Japanese art where broken pottery is repaired with gold, to incredible results.

"I want it not to have happened, but … What do you get from loss? You get awareness of other people’s loss, which allows you to connect with that other person, which allows you to love more deeply and to understand what it’s like to be a human being." Stephen Colbert

This conversation was so raw and tender - truly a wonderful display of human interaction.

I wouldn't say I "suck" at psychotherapy; in fact, I think I'm pretty good at it. But there are sucky moments (mine) and epic fails (mine again). I am continually reminded my work is a "practice." It's not perfect and neither am I, and that's a good thing.

I’m terrible at surfing. Then why do it? Because the freedom to fail without caring is revelatory.

Different objects: one Shiny, one "Shabby." One whose "hair has been loved off," whose eyes have dropped out, and after so many years of love, one who is "loose in the joints." One who has come into their very being through relationship lived and felt. One who has come to understand. One who is Real.

Of these two objects, only one is priceless.

The duck may be all we know. Life the way we've always lived it, felt it, understood it, seen it. Author Rachel Held Evans felt shocked when one day she saw the rabbit. “It happened rather suddenly and it startled me,” she writes, "just as clearly as I could see the duck, I could see another pattern that explained the world."

With thanks to Rev. Tim Hughes Williams and his thoughts on "The Architecture of Doubt." www.browndowntown.org/sermon. See also Rachel Held Evans' memoir, “Evolving in Monkey Town.”
