Join MECASA, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Legal Services for Maine Elders, Immigrant Resource Center of Maine, legislators, advocates, survivors, and other allies on January 14th at 11:30 AM at the Maine State House in support of funding for victims services in Maine!

Critical funding from the federal Victims of Crime Act is continuing to see huge shortfalls – and if the Maine Legislature does not act to fill this gap, victims of crimes will see the services that support them disappear. Maine is facing funding cuts of millions of dollars – money that pays for victim witness advocates like those who have supported the survivors of the Lewiston mass shooting, forensic interviewers that take the statements of child sexual abuse victims in a trauma-informed setting, lost-cost legal services for people seeking Protection From Abuse orders, Maine’s only dedicated shelter for victims of human trafficking, and so much more.

Join us to speak up for victims of crime and the services that support them!

Here is another book I love to wind down evenings. It has great, reflective conversation starters, helps teach kids (and adults) mindfulness practices, AND it’s got a super soft cover.

Reminder that even one breath or one pose is yoga and an opportunity to be present in your mind and body, notice sensations, and attune to what you need (including rest).

Gonna leave this pink gem right.

This book did not disappoint. Confession: I listened to it on Audible, but I was delighted to see the Nagoski sisters have a workbook. You can revisit key sound bites from their research and reflect with this awesome resource.

I love reading, learning, and sharing helpful content. So, despite not being a deep social media user, I do want to use this platform to highlight things that others might gravitate to.

This is a must read for parents, particularly in the present day, in understanding and trying to manage the many emotions, experiences, and identity shifts that come with parenting.

For countless Mainers, housing vouchers have been and are a crucial steppingstone to long-term stability. With rising rents and a housing shortage, waiting lists for vouchers have grown and housing is harder to obtain.

This summer, almost all housing authorities in Maine put a freeze on housing vouchers, including Portland, Westbrook, and Brewer, because of insufficient federal funding.

The impacts from this loss of rental assistance are devastating – vulnerable people, including youth, families, and domestic violence survivors can’t access housing and are homeless for longer. The freeze is also slowing down movement in housing programs and emergency shelters, creating even longer waitlists and fewer open shelter beds, which are critically important as we move into the colder months.

Take a few moments to continue reading below about the impacts of the freeze and how Preble Street is continuing to support people experiencing housing instability:

In a frenetic world
Slowing is effortful.
I must float back to myself
Time and time again.
Reminders, permission,
That it’s okay to just be
To take in small moments with awe
Return to the body
And choose not to push through;
To value rest, to allow self-nourishment
Because—
If I don’t do it, no one will do it for me.
The art of pausing the frenetic fury
Is an act of self-preservation, of sustainability
Of choosing self and life as it could be.

This week is about rest and recharge (more on that later). So, in addition to time with family, walks, and time outside, everyone slept in this morning while I reconnected with an earlier version of myself. I sat in the quiet hours of morning and read while slowly drinking my coffee. I hope you can find moments today and this week to slow down, pause, and reflect as well.
