As we celebrate Black History Month, today we honor three accomplished doctors. Dr. Patricia Bath improved the treatment of cataracts by inventing the Laserphaco Probe. She became the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent. Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston did pioneering research in sickle cell disease and became the first Black woman to direct a public health servcie bureau. Dr. Mae Jemison served as a medical officer in the Peace Corps and become the first Black woman in space.
