Vihta (Finnish Sauna Tradition)

A vihta is a traditional Finnish sauna whisk - bundles of leafy branches used to gently sweep the skin in the heat. Meant for awakening: improving circulation, softly exfoliating, and releasing fresh, forested aromas as the oils meet steam.

Here in Maine, we enjoy vihta made from cedar, pine, juniper - evergreens that know this land. Offering resinous scent and deep, embodied warmth. Traditionally gathered in summer and dried or frozen for later seasons, vihta bundles carry green vitality forward.

We’ll be working with vihta in an upcoming Spring Equinox workshop - a ritual of renewal, breath, and return. Stay tuned. 🌊 ✨

The Raven seats filled up in the flash (sauna sure does make people happy!) so we’ve also invited The Otter to join us for our community sauna next weekend.

Our February and March Community Sauna session are now live - and we’re introducing something new.

In addition to our regular sessions, we’re now offering select 90-minute sessions for those who want more time to fully settle into the rhythm of heat, cold, and rest.

🐋 OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCING THE MINKE 🐋

The Minke will be our third sauna - and our first to live ON the water. The floating sauna of our dreams.

Inspired by a visit to and his sweet Sea Sauna back in 2021, when Selkie Sauna was still just the far off vision of some wild water women. And now that vision widens and our story deepens.

Named for the spring whales who know when to move, she will be built to drift, to return, to follow the light.

Built to gather.
Built to hold warmth in motion.

The images we’re sharing here are a mood board of sorts - woven from the coast of Maine and other floating saunas from around the world - a way to give you a first feeling for what she might look like when she’s ready to be introduced to our waters (did someone say “climbing wall” on one side of the sauna??! 🙌)

Same Selkie spirit.
