🌊 Island Kind Series: Lesley Mahaney, RN 🌊

Since 2008, Lesley has been a dedicated and compassionate presence in the MDI Hospital Emergency Department. She brings deep experience, strong teamwork, and a patient-first mindset to every shift. Patients frequently share how impactful and appreciated her care is, a true reflection of her compassion.

Lesley consistently strives to do what is truly needed for the patient rather than what is easy or convenient. Her respect for all staff and patients, paired with her professional and courteous demeanor, helps foster a positive and collaborative environment throughout the hospital.

“Lesley embodies all of MDI Hospital’s core values and practices them regularly in her work,” shared Jon Bell, MSN, RN, VA-BC, Director of Emergency Services, “we are so grateful to have her on our team!”

On top of her regular day-to-day, Lesley is involved in improvement initiatives serving on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and acts as EMS Coordinator, enhancing patient care and experience throughout our organization.

Thank you, Lesley, for your dedication, reliability, and Island Kind spirit 💙

When fourth-year Harvard Emergency Medicine Resident Physician Caitlin Craft-Hacherl began looking for elective clinical rotations, she wanted more than just a hands-on experience, she wanted connection, challenge, and a chance to practice medicine in a setting where community is at the heart of care. She found all that and more here, at MDI Hospital.

This fall marked Caitlin’s second Emergency Medicine rotation at MDI Hospital, a return she requested after an especially rewarding first experience last year.

Caitlin said that working in a rural emergency department offered perspectives that resident physicians in larger urban hospitals might not encounter. “It broadens your view of medicine and offers a different perspective from what you may be used to. Even if you don’t plan to practice in a rural setting, it’s an invaluable experience.”

After residency completion this year, Caitlin is pursuing a fellowship in Wilderness Medicine, a field that perfectly blends her love for the outdoors with her dedication to emergency care. “Working at MDI Hospital has been an example of the merger between helping people in challenging environments and working closely in nature that I hope to experience during fellowship,” she said.
