After a wisdom tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the empty socket to protect the bone and help healing. If that clot becomes dislodged or dissolves too soon, it leaves the bone exposed. This painful condition is called dry socket.

To avoid dry socket, follow the instructions provided by Dr. Anderson, including:
- Don’t smoke, v**e, or use straws while healing.
- Avoid spitting forcefully or rinsing too hard.
- Stick to soft foods for the first few days.

Dry socket is uncommon, and most people heal without issues. If any problems arise in your recovery, don't hesitate to reach out: (608) 356-2112

What makes oral and maxillofacial surgeons true specialists in the dental field? We must complete a rigorous education and training program that includes dental school, residency, and board certification. Our multi-year hospital-based residencies often take place alongside other surgical specialists. This experience provides exposure to a wide range of cases, from trauma to reconstructive surgery, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver optimal patient care. If you need oral surgery, trust the experts. Call to schedule an appointment: (608) 356-2112

🔹 Cold sores (HSV-1) – a common, contagious viral infection
🔹 Oral thrush – a fungal overgrowth causing white patches and discomfort
🔹 Black hairy tongue – harmless but strange-looking papillae overgrowth
🔹 Oral cancer – a serious condition often linked to HPV, smoking, or alcohol

If you notice unusual changes in your mouth, don’t ignore them. Early detection is key to keeping your smile healthy: (608) 356-2112

When’s the right time to schedule a wisdom tooth consultation for your teen? Early screening is key.

You should schedule their consultation, ideally by the age of 16 or 17, to identify potential issues, even if their wisdom teeth aren't causing symptoms yet. At Oral Surgery Center, SC, Dr. Anderson can use digital imaging to see how wisdom teeth are forming, whether there’s enough room for them, and if they’re growing in the right direction. Spotting potential problems early helps prevent issues like crowding, damage to other teeth, cysts, or infections. Schedule your teen's wisdom teeth consultation: (608) 356-2112
