🥶 Extreme Cold Weather Horse Care Tips 🐴❄️

This level of cold places real stress on the equine body, even in healthy, well-conditioned horses. Supporting them proactively can help reduce stiffness, circulation challenges, dehydration risk, and delayed recovery once temperatures rise.

Key focus areas during extreme cold:

🧊 Hydration Support
• Access to unfrozen water at all times is non-negotiable
• Lukewarm water encourages drinking and helps reduce colic risk
• Check tanks frequently — cold snaps change fast
• We use trace mineral salt 24/7 365 but are also top dressing with electrolytes during this snap

🌾 Nutritional Heat & Energy
• Increased forage supports internal heat production - we currently have alfalfa bales out plus feeding well soaked cubes & beet pulp to add forage AND hydration
• Consistent feeding schedules help maintain gut health. Zesterra, MVP U7, or CEP Gut Check are all great additional gut health additions.

With temps hitting -40° wind chill tomorrow morning, please remember: not all dogs tolerate cold the same — and wind chill matters. Some or this is common sense but here is a guide incase you don’t know.

🐕 HOW LONG IS TOO LONG?

🐾 Short-haired / Thin-coated dogs
(Boxers, Pit Bulls, Greyhounds, Whippets, Chihuahuas, puppies)
❄️ Below 32°F: 10–15 minutes
❄️ Below 0°F: Potty breaks ONLY
❄️ -20° or colder (including wind chill): ❌ Do not leave outside

🐾 Medium-coated dogs even when double coated
(Aussies, Border Collies, Labs, mixed breeds)
❄️ Below 20°F: 20–30 minutes with supervision
❄️ Below 0°F: 5–10 minutes max
❄️ -20° or colder: Potty breaks only

🐾 Double-coated / Nordic breeds
(Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds)
❄️ Below 0°F: 15–30 minutes with shelter & monitoring
❄️ -20° or colder: Time should be LIMITED
❄️ -40° wind chill: ❌ Even cold-loving breeds are at risk

🐶 AGE & HEALTH MATTER

⚠️ Puppies, seniors, and dogs with arthritis, heart disease, or low body fat lose heat faster and should never be left out in extreme cold.

• Crying or refusing to move
• Lethargy
• Pale gums or ears

Cold winter nights can be extra hard on senior bodies—stiff joints, slower movement, and aches that seem to settle in deeper when the temperature drops. ❄️🐾

I use PEMF regularly with my own senior dog during the winter months to help support his comfort, circulation, and overall well-being. It’s become part of our routine to keep him feeling his best as the seasons change.

And honestly… he loves it.
So much so that if I give myself a session and he hears the familiar ticking, he comes over and demands one too. No questions asked—just flops down and waits his turn. 💙

Are MagnaWave machines the same as a TENS unit?

Well the answer is no they are not the same.
(This is a question that gets asked to me on a regular basis, so let me explain the difference.)

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS is a smaller, hand-held device that anyone can utilize for personal use. These devices use electricity to target and eliminate pain. MagnaWave machines emit a Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) which travels much deeper into the body, penetrating muscles, tendons, and even bone! PEMF aids the body in flushing out toxins and increases oxygenation on a cellular level, which in turn reduces pain. TENS and MagnaWave are two separate types of technology and use different methods to aid in the body’s pain relief.
