When I stopped drinking in my 50s I realised quickly that if you wait for everyone to understand your decision you’ll be waiting forever. People will always have something to say. Some think you’re being extreme. Some think you’re judging them. Some turn it into a joke because they’re uncomfortable facing their own drinking.

Most of it comes from stigma. We live in a culture where drinking is seen as normal and choosing not to drink needs an explanation. You’re expected to justify yourself as if wanting a clearer head and a healthier life is somehow unusual.

You don’t owe anyone a reason. Sobriety is a personal choice and it doesn’t need to make sense to anyone except you. The people who respect you won’t question it. The ones who do were never going to offer the support you needed anyway.

We want to give a special shoutout to our First Choice Peers this holiday season: Myste, Sarah G, Matt, Andrea, Amber, Jamie, Nathan, Alicia, Erica, Lindsey, Sarah B, Nancy, Richard, and Mike. These folks aren't in our main office much, so they miss some of our holiday fun, but we don't want them to miss out on the appreciation.

They spend their days giving hope and guidance to people whom others have given up on. In fact, many of these people have given up on themselves. But our peers have been where they are, and they know about the power of recovery. Thank you, FCS Peers!
