One of our native Gentians, which are not nearly common or abundant enough to harvest for medicine — but I use the European Gentiana lutea instead. Such a beautiful plant! And all the gentians are great bitters, stimulating digestion and appetite, getting the liver started cleansing, and generally toning up the whole digestive apparatus.
Today I gave a talk for a company that makes an Amaro, or bitter tonic, about the medicinal properties of the herbs in their liqueur: Amaro Montenegro and Select Aperitivo. Reminds me we can find medicine even at our local bar - especially since most of these drinks started off as medicine.

Yesterday I harvested about 5 pounds of Spikenard root (Aralia racemosa). This amazing plant supports the health of the lungs while clearing out old phlegm. In the same family as Ginseng, it has similar energy tonic properties but is more warming and more lung focused. We use it here at Pines Herbals in our Strong Lungs and Adrenal Energy formula.
This is a woodland medicinal that should only be harvested by knowledgeable harvesters because it is not very common. I have several stands I’ve found over the years and rotate where I harvest.

Shipment of Anemone came in last week — now we will finally have this tincture back in stock! Not many people sell Anemone because it is a low dose botanical, meaning the correct dose is only a few drops of the tincture and more than that can cause stomach upset. But it is my favorite herb for anxiety attacks, panic attacks, and anyone feeling like they’re not in their body.

Do you know about the Sustainable Herbs Program? As herbal medicine gets more mainstream we need to make sure that the plants being used aren’t harvested to the point of extinction, or even to the point of affecting their local ecosystems.

Oh how I love Reishi mushrooms!! Hiking in Linville Gorge last weekend I found a few dozen of the hemlock Reishi (Ganoderma tsugae) and harvested three. It’s been a bountiful year for this amazing longevity mushroom!
We make a double extract of this mushroom and use it to calm the spirit for emotional disturbance and chronic insomnia, but also as a powerful immune modulator that can help with everything from allergies to auto immune conditions to immune deficiency like in cancer treatment. How do you use Reishi?!
