🍎 March is National Nutrition Month! Let’s Talk Nutrition & Dementia 🧠
Good nutrition plays an important role in supporting the health and well‑being of individuals living with dementia. People with dementia often face challenges such as decreased appetite, changes in taste and smell, or difficulty chewing and swallowing, which can increase the risk of malnutrition and dehydration. Providing balanced meals with colorful fruits and vegetables, protein-rich foods, and healthy fats can help maintain strength and support overall health.
Simple strategies—like offering smaller, frequent meals, reducing distractions during eating, and preparing soft, easy‑to-chew foods—can make mealtimes more successful and enjoyable.
Helpful Tips for Caregivers:
• Keep a consistent routine: Regular mealtimes help reduce confusion and improve appetite.
• Use simple, nutrient-dense options: Soft fruits, cooked vegetables, soups, smoothies, and protein-rich foods offer nutrition without overwhelming the person.
• Reduce barriers to eating: Offer finger foods when utensils become challenging, and provide gentle encouragement without pressure.
• Support hydration: Encourage small sips throughout the day, offer preferred beverages, and use thickened liquids if recommended.
