Access to affordable medication is essential for Ohio’s health and economic stability. Community Health Centers (CHCs) serve over one million patients annually across 76 counties, providing comprehensive medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services, regardless of insurance status.
The 340B Drug Pricing Program allows CHCs to maximize limited federal resources by reinvesting the savings directly into patient care. These funds support affordable medications, chronic disease management, and critical community-based services without requiring additional taxpayer dollars.
However, since 2020, more than 35 drug manufacturers have imposed restrictions that limit where and how CHCs can dispense medications. These restrictions create new barriers for patients in rural and underserved areas, forcing many to travel farther, delay treatment, or go without necessary prescriptions entirely.
The Ohio 340B Pharmacy Access Act offers a bipartisan, no-cost solution. This legislation ensures that drug manufacturers cannot discriminate against safety-net providers, thereby protecting access to care and keeping pharmacy services available close to home. More than 20 other states have enacted similar protections—it's time for Ohio to do the same.
