Had a blast a few weeks ago at Green Mountain Community Fitness offering an educational session on the basics of bike measurements. For those athletes who are 1) traveling and need to disassemble/reassemble their bikes, 2) renting a bike, 3) setting up their home indoor trainer to match their outdoor bike, or 4) are jumping into a spin session in the .life Wind studio, being able to measure up your position is essential to replicating your fit. Thank you to Oliver Ames for stopping by to grab these pics!

Or, in this case- what’s your fit telling you about your equipment? Primary complaint in this case was the ankles feeling unstable when pedaling and getting foot swelling/ numbness. These shoes were WELL past their ‘best by’ date- the lugs provided no contact with the pedal resulting in way too much toggle play. That with old cleats (which we couldn’t get the bolts out of) means this rider had one unstable platform! So, in addition to checking bar tape wear and saddle compression, checking shoes and replace cleats regularly. If you’re getting excessive wear at the shoe/pedal interface, it’s a sign that you could benefit from a fit!

Excited to be doing a community talk for the Green Mountain Community Fitness Endurance sports team next month. We will be set up in their Wind Studio discussing the basics of fit measurements. Whether you’re traveling with your bike and need to disassemble/reassemble at your event, will be renting a bike when you travel, or want your indoor set up to match your outdoor riding position, this session will give you the knowledge and skills to understand a little more about how your position measures up. Check out .life website for registration details!

Spring is right around the corner and while you’re thinking of freshening up the bike with new tires, chains- the usual wear items, here’s another component to inspect that might give you a clue to your fit- your saddle. Difficult to see here, but the foam is broken down in the middle of the saddle. Two things to consider: 1) yes saddles break down especially if they have a lot of padding. 2) where this saddle is breaking down indicates the rider was sitting too far forward and not being supported by the wings of the saddle. This is an equipment and a fit issue. Take some time to inspect your saddle for worn foam, uneven wear right vs left, cracked shells, and bent rails. All of these might be an indication that it’s worth a fit before you just replace something. Scheduling 🔗 is in bio 👆

What a stretch of weather we’ve been having! Fall riding is right around the corner and the foliage will be coming out soon. With cooler and more comfortable temps there is still plenty of riding left in the season. Don’t let discomfort on the bike hold you back from enjoying everything fall riding has to offer. Fittings are picking up again but there are still appointment times available. Follow the scheduling button in my profile to set up an appointment today!

Got to do some saddle testing at recently. Figured was an appropriate place to swap out and try some different saddle shapes (yes, rode around with a spare saddle in my bag all day). Really wanted to get a feel for two different saddle shapes- one being purely flat and another semi-curved. Some pluses and minuses I observed with both:

Flats saddles absolutely allow for more fore after movement on the bike. Set up was relatively straightforward with saddle being level or a few degrees nose down. However, I found that it lacked the feedback on where I needed to be seated. This was especially challenging on the mountain bike since I was in and out of the saddle so often and found myself searching for the ‘right spot’.

The semi curved saddle shape allowed me to settle into one position with more feedback for where I was on the saddle. In addition having the raised rear of the saddle provided something to anchor to and push off of when doing a steep climb.

A semi curved design is trickier to set up though. Nose too far down and it feels like sliding into the front of the bike too much. Nose too high and it forces the pelvis to roll backward to avoid pressure. Get it set up just right though, it provides great feedback.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. What saddle shape do you prefer? *note that through all of this I’m speaking in general terms of saddle shapes, not actual brands/models*

Do you always have to slam the stem?

Not necessarily. Like every element of the fit, handlebar position is unique to the rider's measurements and their style of riding. One challenge with modern mountain bikes is the front end stack- longer travel forks and taller head tubes can raise the position of the bars relative to the saddle height. For riders with shorter inseams (lower saddle height) and a preference toward climbing or long distance efforts, being able to lower the bars will improve efficiency and comfort.

Speaking of comfort. One physical symptom to look out for is upper trapezius tightness. When the bars are too high the rider may shrug the shoulders up to get the shoulders away from the bars.

Working with a can help eliminate the guess work by using the right tools- in this case a sizing stem. If you're trying to find the right position, once you've spend hundreds of dollars on different stems and countless hours experimenting with riding positions, the cost and time invested in a good fit doesn't seem so far fetched.

As always, the needs of a fit are unique and specific to each rider AND bike. If you're experiencing discomfort, or feel like you can't get into a powerful position on the bike (yes, mountain bikes too), a fit can probably help!
