When Dr. Jill started researching su***de 40 years ago, the consensus in the scientific community was that su***de could not be prevented. Now we know that this is false.

Today, Dr. Jill and Chris Munden, AFSP’s Senior Manager of Research and Dissemination, discuss some of the research that has shown that su***de can be prevented and share some of the practical methods that may help someone in a crisis. 💙

Many programs and policies are developed without direct input from the communities they strive to support. The Upright was created to change that.

As part of AFSP's ongoing commitment to support communities with disproportionate impacts related to su***de, The Upright is a collection of AFSP's resources that acknowledges the critical gaps in mental health care and aims to advance health equity in su***de prevention.

Learn more about The Upright during our online summit tomorrow, October 28th. Register:

Recently, the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention launched The Upright. Developed to address critical gaps in access, effectiveness, and cultural relevance surrounding mental health, su***de prevention, and the lived experience of communities, The Upright is rooted in equity, action, and coll...

Research saves lives.

AFSP was founded in 1987 by survivors of su***de loss and researchers as a research organization dedicated to understanding su***de and identifying evidence-informed strategies to help save lives. Now, because of research, we know that:

🧠 There are elements related to brain function that make decision-making more difficult for someone in crisis.
💙 Therapies and treatments exist that have been proven to help people who feel so desperate in their distress that they do not see a way to live.
🔍 ...and more.

Sometimes a teen struggling with their mental health just wants to talk to someone who gets them — like another teen. 🤝 💙

An AFSP funded study led by Catherine Glenn, PhD, found that teen-to-teen crisis lines, which are staffed by trained adolescent volunteers, make teens more likely to open up. Not only does this benefit the teen calling the line, but volunteers reported feeling motivated, fulfilled, empathetic, and more.
